A westbound coal empty rests on Track 3 in the yard at Phippsburg. The SD70ACe see here is bringing up the tail end of the train. The mine at Energy (where the train will load) has a balloon track, effectively turning the train around as it loads.

The previous day, the yard at Phippsburg was empty. Overnight, however, a westbound coal empty arrived in the yard! It is stopped on Track 3 and is waiting for a crew to take the train to Energy. Upon loading at Energy, the train will return to Denver and ultimately deliver the coal to the Valmont power plant in Boulder.

A look west out of the yard at Phippsburg. All of Phippsburg falls under Yard Limits with CTC on either side. So the dispatcher aligns trains in and they "disappear" from the dispatcher's view. All trains that come through P-Burg undergo a crew change. Trains leaving to or coming from the east have Denver-based crews. Trains leaving to or coming from the west have Phippsburg-based crews.

The sound of silence! When I visited Phippsburg five years ago, there were three coal trains waiting in the yard here. Since then, of course, coal traffic has substantially dropped off. So, on this Friday afternoon, the rails rest empty.

The only thing in the Phippsburg yard on this Friday afternoon was an AC4400CW and a pair of Xcel Energy coal hoppers. Most likely these hoppers were bad ordered. Other than this, the yard was entirely...quiet.

Time to head east! With a fresh crew on board, this coal load pulls away from Phippsburg to start the 167 mile journey back to Denver. With the recent departure of a westbound empty, only one train will be left in the yard after this load is gone.

As a crew prepares to climb on UP 7084 and take it east, one of the two empties has also been crewed as it slowly heading west away from the camera on Yard Track 1.

A nice overall shot of Phippsburg with a trio of trains sitting in the yard. Interesting to note that the train on the far left has three mid-train swing helpers, for a total of seven units on the train.

Near the east end of Phippsburg in the early dawn light, the yard is currently loaded up with a trio of trains waiting for crews. The train on the left is loaded and ready to head east while the other two will continue west to load at the mine at Energy.

Union Pacific still keeps a Rio Grande Jordan Spreader (AX-45) on-hand up in Phippsburg...just in case! I'm not sure how long the spreader has sat in P-Burg tied down, but I suspect it has been awhile since it saw any action.

After a crew change in Phippsburg, this eastbound coal train is leaving two tracks behind for the single track main ahead.
