Note the houses in the background. These houses are all in the new Arvada neighborhood of Leyden Rock. Four years ago, the land there was empty not a part of Arvada. One of my daughters best friends was on the Zephyr on this day, so we made sure to get track side in order to get a few pictures and hopefully a wave. Which my daughter did get and returned! While getting this shot on this morning, it occurred to me that, within a few more years, this shot will no longer be possible as the trees in the foreground will no doubt grow and obscure the view. When I visited Phippsburg five years ago, there were three coal trains waiting in the yard here. Since then, of course, coal traffic has substantially dropped off. All of Phippsburg falls under Yard Limits with CTC on either side. So the dispatcher aligns trains in and they "disappear" from the dispatcher's view. All trains that come through P-Burg undergo a crew change. Trains leaving to or coming from the east have Denver-based crews. Trains leaving to or coming from the west have Phippsburg-based crews.
