Just west of Leyden, some light power heads west on a great fall morning. Some morning mist clings to the ground as Denver's skyline is clearly visible in the distance.

With the early morning light reflecting off the sides of this light power move, black and white just somehow seemed appropriate!

An AC4400CW and an SD70ACe cruise west in bright morning sunlight. Note the houses in the background. These houses are all in the new Arvada neighborhood of Leyden Rock. Four years ago, the land there was empty not a part of Arvada. Arvada annexed the land from Jefferson County that year, and construction started in 2013.

The westbound Zephyr is running about 45 minutes late as it heads west at track speed on the main at Leyden. One of my daughters best friends was on the Zephyr on this day, so we made sure to get track side in order to get a few pictures and hopefully a wave. Which my daughter did get and returned!

The westbound Zephyr knocks down a clear signal at the east end of Plain on its trip west. While getting this shot on this morning, it occurred to me that, within a few more years, this shot will no longer be possible as the trees in the foreground will no doubt grow and obscure the view.

The only thing in the Phippsburg yard on this Friday afternoon was an AC4400CW and a pair of Xcel Energy coal hoppers. Most likely these hoppers were bad ordered. Other than this, the yard was entirely...quiet.

The sound of silence! When I visited Phippsburg five years ago, there were three coal trains waiting in the yard here. Since then, of course, coal traffic has substantially dropped off. So, on this Friday afternoon, the rails rest empty.

A look west out of the yard at Phippsburg. All of Phippsburg falls under Yard Limits with CTC on either side. So the dispatcher aligns trains in and they "disappear" from the dispatcher's view. All trains that come through P-Burg undergo a crew change. Trains leaving to or coming from the east have Denver-based crews. Trains leaving to or coming from the west have Phippsburg-based crews.
