A quick roster shot of a gray Kansas City Southern SD70MAC. It is currently on lease to BNSF and led BNSF's Provo, UT to Denver, CO manifest over the former Rio Grande. From this point, it will have a straight shot the rest of the way in to the yard.

On a very chilly January morning, a KCS-led BNSF (trackage rights) manifest approaches the grade crossing at Simms Street in Arvada. There was no horn to be heard at this moment, as the grade crossing at Simms Street has been converted to a "quiet zone", to keep Arvada a little quieter.

It isn't too often that a Kansas City Southern unit shows up on the Moffat, let alone on the point. However, on this (very snowy) Wednesday morning, a gray KCS SD70MAC leads a BNSF manifest east out of Leyden toward Denver.

An SD70ACe leads two AC4400CWs on a very long MNYRO. Some of these cars will dropped off in Grand Junction before the rest of the train continues on Roper Yard in Salt Lake City.

While trains in the 21st century typically don't run on a schedule, many trains do frequently depart their originating terminal around the same time each day. For a long time, UP's MNYRO departed North Yard in the morning, usually 30-45 minutes before Amtrak. However, UP seems to have changed things up a bit and now and the MNYRO is departing in the late afternoon / early evening. Here, the westbound is approaching Leyden.

With a cold tree as a frame, this eastbound load emerges from the fog and passes by frozen weeds as it continues on the last six miles of its journey before being turned over to a new crew.

It is a dark, chilly, foggy morning in Arvada along the Moffat! This eastbound coal load appears out of the fog (with some nice effects from the headlights) as it approaches the grade crossing at Simms Street.

This westbound manifest had a single DPU bringing up the rear. Unfortunately, it was facing the "wrong way" for a picture. Even with that being the case, the unit itself - a C44AC-CTE - looks pretty good. These Tier 2 compliant variations on the AC4400CW are some of the most common units on Union Pacific's 8,000+ unit roster.

The approach (yellow) signal at east Leyden is an indication that the maintenance window on the Moffat hasn't quite come to a close! This train will hold the main at Leyden for a bit until maintenance has cleared up.

One thing to note is the signal itself. The signals at east Leyden are the only signals from the DRGW days (save for the signal bridge at Utah Junction) that have not yet been replaced.

A hint of yellow is showing up in the trees behind this manifest in Arvada. This particular manifest is headed for Phippsburg (or "P-Burg", as it is known on the railroad). From there, a local will run these hoppers to their destination(s) further west on the branch in Steamboat Springs or Craig.

Traffic on the Moffat is slowly returning to normal. Very little traffic is running during the day right now as maintenance continues to do some work on the line. But the California Zephyr returned to the line last Saturday and traffic at night has picked up. Here, a westbound manifest headed for Phippsburg on the Craig Branch crosses Simms Street in the afternoon.

This Georgetown Railway Equipment (GREX) work train was used extensively during the fill reconstruction work at Plain. Hopefully the fact that the train is returning to North Yard is a sign that repairs are getting close to being complete!

Approaching Simms Street, this GREX work train is headed for North Yard. The train has been working at Plain for three weeks as part of the effort to repair the washed out fill between Tunnel 2 and Tunnel 3.

The Moffat was closed on September 13th (Friday the Thirteenth!) when flood waters demolished the fill. Eight days earlier, UP opened the Moffat at night to a handful of coal trains. The fill still needed reinforcing though, so it has been 24 days since a train (other than a work train) ran on the Moffat.

This eastbound BNSF manifest is approaching the grade crossing at Simms Street in Arvada after meeting Amtrak at Leyden. Not uncommon is the large number of tank cars that make up the train. A bit more uncommon, however, is the Heritage 1 C44-9W leading the train!

After meeting its westbound counterpart at Leyden, this Provo-Lincoln train is whining in dynamics as it heads east toward Denver. After a crew change, the train will continue on to Lincoln, NE.
