A northbound Powder River Basin-bound coal empty sits stopped at milepost 12 alongside Church Ranch Lake. The train is waiting to meet a southbound at Broomfield. The coal train is too long, however, to fit in the siding without blocking any crossing. Once the southbound gets closer, the dispatcher will let this guy know that he can continue pulling in to the siding.

While trains in the 21st century typically don't run on a schedule, many trains do frequently depart their originating terminal around the same time each day. For a long time, UP's MNYRO departed North Yard in the morning, usually 30-45 minutes before Amtrak. However, UP seems to have changed things up a bit and now and the MNYRO is departing in the late afternoon / early evening. Here, the westbound is approaching Leyden.

An SD70ACe leads two AC4400CWs on a very long MNYRO. Some of these cars will dropped off in Grand Junction before the rest of the train continues on Roper Yard in Salt Lake City.

As of this picture, there were only 11 unpatched Espee units left on UP's roster. All the remaining had been patched, repainted, or retired. I actually caught this same unit exactly one month earlier on the tail end of an eastbound oil train. Good to see if hanging out in Colorado!

Between Denver and the Moffat Tunnel, there are only three control points left that still have classic Rio Grande searchlight signals: Fox Junction, Utah Junction, and East Leyden. Not knowing how long they will last, I figure it is good to get as many pictures of the signals as possible. Here, the westbound MNYRO is getting ready to knock down a clear signal on its journey west.

The conductor of the MRONY (in the siding at Leyden) stands ready to inspect the MNYRO (counterpart to the MRONY). One of my favorite components of this shot are the snowy/muddy tire tracks. Least favorite component? I hate the power line running through the top part of the scene.

The westbound MNYRO is frequently long enough (and, thus, heavy enough) to merit a DPU. Unfortunately, on this chilly Friday, the DPU was facing the "wrong way" for the shot. Granted the direction of the DPU makes zero difference to the operation of the train...but I sure prefer it when the last DPU faces away from the train.

The MRONY (Manifest, Roper, UT to North Yard, CO) just met its counterpart (the MNYRO) at Leyden. With a spot now free in the yard, DS-86 gave UP 5651 a clear signal to run in to town. With the number of coal trains decreasing on the Moffat, it is good that UP still has at least two manifests a day running over the line.
