Perhaps, somewhere in an alternate dimension, the MKT survived into the 21st Century and wound up owning the ex-DRGW. Were that the case, shots like this (with this paint scheme) might be common place! Instead, UP 1988 is unique and leading an eastbound coal load, holding on the main at Tabernash.

Looking across an open field at Tabernash, we see an eastbound UP coal load (with UP 1988 leading) on the main. The main and the siding separate at Tabernash. There are no grade crossings on the main at Tabernash, but there are on the siding. As a result, long train typically hold the main rather than taking the siding to avoid blocking the grade crossing.

The westbound Zephyr has a clear signal at the east switch of Tabernash. The ski season is coming to an end at the Winter Park resort off in the distance. A portion of the result, known as Mary Jane, will remain open for another week.

Near the head end of the train, the conductor from Amtrak puts the switch at east Tabernash back in power (under dispatcher control). The Zephyr is temporarily stopped while the conductor does that, offering up a great view of the Silver Rapids and Silver Solarium on the rear of the train.

A look at the harsher side of railroading! The east switch at Tabernash was not locking up on the dispatcher's board, meaning he could not be certain it was properly lined. As a result, the dispatcher was not able to get the Zephyr a light out of Tabernash. The solution was to have the conductor hop off the train with a broom and sweep the snow and ice out of the switch points. Then, manually throw the switch to the siding and back to the main. Meanwhile, the Zephyr got authority from the dispatcher to proceed past the red signal at east Tabernash. Once the lead units are on the switch, the conductor will put the switch back in power and the train will continue east.

A coal load that came off the Craig Branch (from the Energy Mine) earlier this morning sits patiently at Tabernash. It has been waiting here for over an hour, waiting for the Winter Park Express to run around its train and for the California Zephyr. The Zephyr just came through the siding, and the coal load will soon get a signal to continue east.

As the special passes by the east switch of Tabernash, the SD70ACe-T4s are starting to load (pull) as the UP units start to throttle down. Shortly after this shot, the UP units will be in full dynamics and the new Tier-4 EMDs will be pulling up the grade.

Exhaust from the one unit that isn't at least Tier-3 compliant (the GE AC4400CW) drifts a bit through the frame as the two SD70ACe-T4 prototypes head east for testing. Random fact of the day: If Baseline Road in Boulder were to continue west of Boulder in a straight line over the Continental Divide, it would cut through this picture. It was go over the closest hill in the distance and cross the tracks back and to the left.

With the westbound Zephyr now west of Tabernash, the EMD special can start its testing. In this shot, all the UP power is throttled up and pulling the train toward the east end of the siding. The EMD prototypes are isolated from the UP power (meaning they are being controlled independently by someone in the cab) and not currently loading.

The Zephyr had a special car on the tail end on this morning. The "Cyrus K Holliday" was headed west. This private car was built in 1921 and is owned by the San Diego Trust and Savings Company. Cyrus Holliday was one of the founders of Topeka, KS, a general in the American Civil War, and the first president of the Atchison, Topeka, and Santa Fe Railway.

There are two words that most (outdoor) photographers really hate hearing: "Partly Cloudy". This particular morning had clouds drifting through the sky, randomly casting shadows. This scene of the Zephyr heading west at Tabernash had been bright a sun just five minutes earlier, and would return to bright and sunny about two minutes after the passing of the Zephyr!

After meeting a (late) westbound California Zephyr at Tabernash, the MRONY (Manifest, Roper, UT to North Yard, CO) got a clear signal from the dispatcher to start pulling east. A little exhaust is kicked up as the head end starts pulling up the 1.29% grade.

A pair of private cars (the "Evelyn A Henry" and the "Warren R Henry") were found on the back of the westbound Zephyr on this morning. The cars belong to Patrick Henry Creative Promotions. While the company specializes in food and beverage marketing, they own these two cars (which are based out of Houston) and you can charter the cars from the company.

At the east switch of Tabernash, the westbound California Zephyr enters the siding. The Zephyr is meeting the eastbound MRONY, currently holding on the main track. There is a grade crossing on the siding at Tabernash (but there is not one on the main, and the main and siding are not parallel to each other). As a result, coal trains or manifests that have to hold at Tabernash will typically hold the main so the grade crossing on the siding is not blocked.

This westbound came about 25 minutes too late! The sun is now well behind the mountains to the west as the train enters the siding at Tabernash. It's headlight is dimmed so as not to blind the crew on the eastbound sitting on the main. Winter is definitely on the horizon as you can see snow accumulating on the mountain peaks on the Continental Divide.
