In accordance with emissions rules, more and more Tier 4 units are showing up on both UP and BNSF...specifically, the ET44C4 for BNSF. Like its ES44C4 ancestor, this unit is an A1A-A1A unit, with only the outside axles on either truck being powered. This is a specification that BNSF is absolutely in love with. They haven't purchased a standard C-C unit in probably five years now.

The sun works at melting the snow on the ground on a crystal clear February morning. After about ten days of very cold temperatures, things are starting to warm up with temperatures around 40°F. A BNSF Provo-Lincoln manifest heads toward the west switch at Leyden.

This Provo-Denver is relatively short, with only three engines and 45 cars in tow. It seems that BNSF's Provo-Lincoln manifests are generally longer than the Provo-Denver manifests. The train has a clear signal at the west switch of Leyden here in this February snow storm.

This morning is a somewhat typical morning for a February day in the Denver area. The temperature is about 25°F and the skies are mostly cloudy as the Zephyr, running on time, heads west at track speed west of Leyden.

Potpourri Power! This westbound BNSF Denver-Provo has a Heritage 2 C44-9W, a New Image ES44DC, and a Heritage C44-9W. The train is just west of Leyden, approaching a clear intermediate at MP 14.5.

None of these three GP40-2s started life as Union Pacific. The first two (UP 1422 and UP 1425) both once wore scarlet and gray and were on Espee's roster. The third unit (UP 1370) is of Missouri Pacific ancestry! The three geeps are the power on the West Local and are headed for the Rocky Spur.

Just three lonely geeps making the trip west out of Leyden under some dynamic, cloudy skies. The train...err, engines...are headed for the Rocky Spur to pickup a couple cars at the aggregate plant at the west end.

A trio of GP40-2s head west out of Leyden. They are the West Local for the day! Crazy how, at one point, this local needed four engines for all the cars it had. Today, it is going west with nothing.

UP's manifest between North Yard and Roper (and vice versa) is now a thrice-weekly train. It departs from either yard on Monday's, Wednesday's, and Friday's. More often than not, it is dark when the train makes it to Colorado. On this Tuesday, however, the train happened to come east in the morning. And with an interesting power configuration to boot! Loved the five SD70s (two SD70ACes and two SD70Ms) leading the train.

It isn't too often you see a train these days with seven units on the head end! Yet that was the case on this morning as the MRONY was setup to run in a 7x(0)x1 configuration. Here, the train is approaching the west switch of Leyden.

An SD70ACe and an C44AC-CTE lead an eastbound coal load just west of Leyden. This coal train was loaded at West Elk on the North Fork Branch. Coal traffic on the Craig Branch (to the Energy Mine) has all but disappeared in the past few weeks.

Just west of Leyden, a BNSF unit sand train is pulling hard, but moving slow! This sand is fracking sand, which will be used to extract oil from wells in Utah. It is entirely possible this power will be used on a loaded oil train on the trip back east in the not-too-distant future.
