The siding of Yarmony has changed a lot in the last two decades. It used to be one of the shortest sidings between Denver and Bond. A derailment in the early 2000s took out the west switch of the siding. And UP left the west switch out of service for years afterward, until finally extending the siding to the west and moving the east switch to the west as well. The eastbound Rocky Mountaineer passes through the colorful scene just east of Yarmony as some low-hanging clouds envelop a part of the mountain in the background. The train has made pretty good time on the trip west out of Denver, getting from North Yard to this point at Yarmony in about five hours. The train could have been here about 40 minutes sooner, had it not needed to stop at Tabernash to wait for the eastbound California Zephyr. The conductor from the coal train gives a friendly wave to the engineer on the special. Notice anything unusual about the power on the coal train? You may have noticed that the second unit is an SD70M. It is exceptionally rare to find a unit with DC-traction motors on coal trains these days. There is some speculation that, with the closing of Burnham, UP has to grab whatever power they can find when a units with AC-traction fails. The power will continue on to Glenwood Springs where it will be set out in the yard. Then, three units at a time will be added to eastbound coal loads coming from the mines in Grand Junction. In November 2000, an accident took the siding out and it wasn't until March 14, 2006 that UP finally got the siding reopened. Now, the siding was lengthened by nearly 3000 feet at the same time, but it still took a very long time.
