Rolling west on the main at Yarmony, passengers on the Zephyr likely are enjoying the colorful shrubs along the banks of the Colorado River. The siding of Yarmony has changed a lot in the last two decades. It used to be one of the shortest sidings between Denver and Bond. A derailment in the early 2000s took out the west switch of the siding. And UP left the west switch out of service for years afterward, until finally extending the siding to the west and moving the east switch to the west as well. The result is now one of the longer siding with concrete ties throughout.

Although the leaves have finally fallen off of most of the deciduous trees at this point in the fall, a lot of the ground shrubs are still holding a lot of color. The eastbound Rocky Mountaineer passes through the colorful scene just east of Yarmony as some low-hanging clouds envelop a part of the mountain in the background.

The eastbound Rocky Mountaineer follows along a relatively still Colorado River just east of Yarmony. This is near the location of a derailment nearly 20 years ago that involved one of EMD's SD70ACe demo units.

Not too far east of Yarmony, we find the westbound Zephyr making great time amidst fall foliage and the Colorado River. With so few trains on the Moffat (meaning minimal meets) and very few slow orders right now, it can be a substantial challenge chasing the Zephyr!

A westbound manager's special follows along the Colorado River at the west switch of Yarmony. The train has made pretty good time on the trip west out of Denver, getting from North Yard to this point at Yarmony in about five hours. The train could have been here about 40 minutes sooner, had it not needed to stop at Tabernash to wait for the eastbound California Zephyr.

An eastbound coal load, which just came off the Craig Branch, sits in the siding at Yarmony to wait for UP's Manager Special. The conductor from the coal train gives a friendly wave to the engineer on the special. Notice anything unusual about the power on the coal train? You may have noticed that the second unit is an SD70M. It is exceptionally rare to find a unit with DC-traction motors on coal trains these days. There is some speculation that, with the closing of Burnham, UP has to grab whatever power they can find when a units with AC-traction fails.

In this shot, the Zephyr is located right around the former location of the east switch of Yarmony. After a derailment in 2001, UP lengthened the siding at move the east switch further west so it wasn't on a curve.

At the west switch of Yarmony, a power move consisting of 15 engines heads west toward its crew change at Bond. The power will continue on to Glenwood Springs where it will be set out in the yard. Then, three units at a time will be added to eastbound coal loads coming from the mines in Grand Junction. Once in Denver, the units will be set out and this will happen all over again!

After sitting overnight, the eastbound MRONY is about to receive a fresh crew and continue east toward Denver. It'll take a while to untie the train, however, and the westbound Zephyr and a light power move will come through before the train departs.

For over five years, the siding of Yarmony was Out Of Service on the Moffat Mainline. In November 2000, an accident took the siding out and it wasn't until March 14, 2006 that UP finally got the siding reopened. Now, the siding was lengthened by nearly 3000 feet at the same time, but it still took a very long time. This coal empty is actually tied down in the siding at Yarmony, waiting for a crew to arrive from Grand Junction.

Working its way toward Bond, this coal empty is running parallel to the Colorado River. Around this long curve, the train will pass the siding of Yarmony which has been out of service since a derailment at the west switch in the year 2000.
