BNSF's Raton Subdivision between Trinidad, CO and La Junta, CO uses track warrants along with ABS (Automatic Block Signals). In ABS territory, signals are used for block detection only and do NOT grant authority. In the case of the east end of the siding of Hoehne, both signals show clear as there is nothing approaching from the east. In ABS, all signals essentially act as intermediates in CTC.

At Pueblo Junction, trains can either turn to the north and head toward the Joint Line and Denver, or turn to the south and either head toward the Pueblo Subdivision (and La Junta) or the Spanish Peaks Subdivision (and Trinidad). This particular train is a local headed for La Junta.

Winter hit Colorado a bit early this year, with several inches of accumulation coming in mid-October at the Palmer Divide. BNSF 6085 south sits in the "Sag" at Spruce a few miles north of Palmer Lake. The train has a yellow signal and will have to wait for a few northbounds before continuing south.

7,225 feet above sea level, this northbound coal empty crosses over the top of the Palmer Divide at Palmer Lake. A single SD70MAC leads the northbound empty toward the start of the double track just ahead.

While a southbound coal load cools its traction motors in the "Sag" on Main One, a northbound coal empty moves at track speed (roughly 40 MPH) on Main Two on its way north toward Denver. Pre-World War I, the DRGW track and the ATSF track crossed one another here...you can still see the remains of the bridge where the two tracks crossed. Today at this location, ownership of the tracks change hands between UP and BNSF on either track.

Just north of Larkspur, a southbound UP coal load work on charging up the 1.2% grade toward Palmer Lake. The sun is trying to break through the clouds and offers some nice light on the dusting of snow in the distance. Note the northbound coal empty near the right side of the picture on Main Two.

This southbound UP coal load is crossing the classic Santa Fe bridge just south of Larkspur. The bridge crosses over Fox Farm Road (off to the left) as well as South Spruce Mountain Road (in the foreground). The temperature on this October afternoon...28 degrees!
