BNSF has had trackage rights on the Moffat for over 18 years. They were granted the rights by the Surface Transportation Board as a part of the condition of the UP/SP merger. They run at least one train each way, each day. The eastbound train, which originates in Provo, UT, frequently descends toward Denver in late morning or early afternoon. Such is the case on this day as the train, composed primarily of tanks, heads east at Rocky.

Winter Wonderland! The day before the last day of February, the City of Denver set a record for the most snowfall in history for the month of February. 22.2" fell this February, which is ironic because ten days earlier, it was shaping up to be one of the driest February's in history. Okay, enough weather talk. BNSF's Provo to Denver manifest heads east at East Rocky through the roughly 5" of fresh snow.

Got snow? This eastbound is leaving Rocky and about to head in to Barbara's Gulch. There are some fairly fresh tire tracks in the snow from UP maintenance vehicles headed for Rocky the day before.

This BNSF manifest is kick up a little bit of snow as it crosses over Indiana Street. The train is approaching a Diverging Approach (red-over-yellow) signal at the west end of Leyden. The BNSF yard in Denver currently has no room for the train, so it will need to hang out in the siding at Leyden for a bit until some space opens up.

A ES44C4 and a pair of C44-9Ws, all running elephant-style, head toward the west switch of Leyden and the siding. While this day offer a break from snow flurries, the sun still never fully came out as there was a thin layer of clouds. The temperature for this shot was hovering right around 11°F!
