Here is a nice surprise and good ending to 2015! I got a tip that UP 1996 (Southern Pacific Heritage Unit) was leading an eastbound UP manifest on the Moffat. Here, the train was heading straight on into the sun at Plain. Rather nice having a quartet of SD70s on the point of the train!

After knocking down a clear signal at East Rocky, UP 1996 leads an extra manifest toward the west entrance to Barbara's Gulch. I say it is an "extra" manifest because it is not a regularly scheduled manifest. Roper yard does not typically send out an eastbound train to North Yard on Sunday's. However, it did on the Sunday after Christmas this year, and UP 1996 was on the point!

In the roughly eight and a half years since UP unveiled the Heritage Units, this is the first time I've caught UP 1996 on the point! Granted, it is only the third time I've ever caught it period, so it isn't that surprising it is the first time I've seen it leading.

Paying homage to Southern Pacific, the scheme on UP 1996 represents SP's Daylight Scheme, worn by many of its passengers trains (including Alco PAs and EMD E/F units) as well as SP 4449 (steam). Here, the Heritage Unit looks great amongst snow and blue skies.

The classic Rio Grande searchlight signals that have stood for decades at East Leyden won't be standing much longer! As you can see in this picture, new signals have been erected and are merely waiting to be activated. Once that is done, the old signals will come down.

How's this for an interesting site!? The MRONYX (Extra Manifest, Roper, UT to North Yard, CO) has a sole DPU on the tail end...well, almost the tail end! A single covered hopper is behind the unit. Most likely, this covered hopper was picked up by the train somewhere between Grand Junction and Denver.
