About five minutes prior to the arrival of this Denver-Provo, the sun ducked behind the clouds of a building storm to the west. An old (relatively speaking) C44-9W leads BNSFs trackage rights manifest west out of leyden, crossing over Indiana Street. The bridge is still lettered "Rio Grande"! At some point in the future, Arvada plans to widen Indiana Street to four lanes, at which point the bridge will be replaced.

At the base of Coal Creek Canyon, a trio of BNSF GEs lead a westbound manifest towardan approach (yellow) signal. The train is taking the siding at Plain, but the dispatcher could not get the signal at East Plain to set up. So, after stopping at the red signal, DS-82 will flag the train in to the siding.

It is well past sunset as this westbound BNSF manifest rolls west down the siding at Plain. The crew on this train is based out of Grand Junction. This is a recent change on BNSF as they eliminated the crew change point in Kremmling. Grand Junction crews now take eastbounds as close to Denver as possible. If they don't make it, a van comes and picks them up and a Denver crew takes the train the rest of the way in. Then, the Grand Junction crew (after staying the night in Denver) takes a westbound back to Grand Junction.

About twenty minutes after sunset, a westbound BNSF manifest slowly pulls into the siding at Plain. The train will wait for the eastbound Zephyr, which is running on time. By the time the Zephyr arrived, it was too dark to get any shots. A few more weeks or so and that will no longer be the case!
