In a couple of years, this picture will be radically different! The track in the foreground, one of RTD's Light Rail tracks, will still be there. And the the next track over will likely still be there (so UP can serve a few customers along the line), but the rest of the tracks and the buildings will all be replaced with condos and apartments as UP has sold the Burnham property to a developer.

Empty rails. Sadly, after being the main maintenance facility for Rio Grande for decades (and a major facility for UP as well for nearly two decades), Burnham Shops are closing. All the power that was once stored here has been moved to places such as North Platte, NE and Grand Junction, CO. Soon, these tracks and the buildings will be ripped up and this scene will turn from railroad/industrial to residential.

The traction motors that power the wheels are electric motors (which is why train engines are referred to as "diesel-electric"). Because they are electric, there are no gears, which means the engine can operate the same regardless of whether it is moving forward or backward. Thus, it doesn't matter which way DPU units are facing. On this morning, the last unit was facing forward, showing its long hood to the world!
