While you expect Rio Grande power to disappear over time and things like signals to be replaced, I have to admit I never really thought about the possibility of Burnham closing. The track in the foreground, one of RTD's Light Rail tracks, will still be there. And the the next track over will likely still be there (so UP can serve a few customers along the line), but the rest of the tracks and the buildings will all be replaced with condos and apartments as UP has sold the Burnham property to a developer. Sadly, after being the main maintenance facility for Rio Grande for decades (and a major facility for UP as well for nearly two decades), Burnham Shops are closing. All the power that was once stored here has been moved to places such as North Platte, NE and Grand Junction, CO. Three GEs (each a different model) lead the train. It wouldn't see another train until it met the eastbound Zephyr on the western slope! In the distance, you can see the Pecos Street overpass. Ultimately built because Pecos Street was constantly blocked by coal trains on Bypass 1 and 2. Ironic that coal is virtually non-existent now! Because they are electric, there are no gears, which means the engine can operate the same regardless of whether it is moving forward or backward. Thus, it doesn't matter which way DPU units are facing. On this morning, the last unit was facing forward, showing its long hood to the world!
