Belt Industrial Lead (UP) Union Pacific
UP's MNYNP is shuffling some cars around in North Yard before it can head north toward Cheyenne. In order to have enough room to switch cars around over a few tracks, it actually enters the Belt Industrial Lead. My favorite type of engine since the GP60 will be leading the train - an SD70M with flared radiators.

Belt Industrial Lead (UP) Norfolk Southern, Union Pacific
Today's MNYNP will have an all-EMD consist, including a pair of Norfolk Southern units being borrowed by UP. The unit featured in this shot is an SD70M-2. Even though EMD released them at the start of 2005, I've seen fewer than a dozen in the last 11 years. Neither UP nor BNSF bought any, so they don't show up in Colorado too often.

Yard Shots BNSF
A pair of BNSF SD40-2s get ready to do some switching at the industries near Utah Junction. One of the industries served by BNSF here is Altogether Recycling. They fill up multiple carloads of material on a weekly basis. All of the track seen here was once narrow gauge and, later, "three rail" (both narrow and standard gauge). There are a few places where the narrow gauge rail can still be found in between the standard gauge rails.

With it switching nearly completed, the MNYNP sits just past the signal at Broadway on the Belt Industrial Lead. The engineer will wait here for a van to bring the conductor up to the headend. Upon his arrival and a final air test, the train will head east on the Belt Industrial Lead and then turn north on UP's Greeley Sub.

The eastbound Zephyr is running well ahead of schedule on this chilly first day of May. The snow fell yesterday and, while it warm enough to melt away down in Denver, the altitude is a bit greater here at Blue Mountain, keeping the snow from melting.

I really like this particular shot of the eastbound Zephyr as it approaches the grade crossing at Blue Mountain. The weather in Colorado is known for being a bit crazy! The first day of May finds a scene that looks like it could be December!

Spring tries to fight through the snow to the east as an on-time Zephyr descends down from Big Ten Curve on the approach to the west switch of Rocky. Amazingly, trains going through Big Ten wind up facing every direction on the compass as they make their way through the loop.

This picture offers up an interesting transition between Winter and Spring! The Zephyr, running early, descending down Big Ten Loop amidst the remaining snow from a blizzard the day before. Highway 93 seems to be the divider between the two seasons as most of the snow to the east has already melted. The Denver skyline is just visible near the upper-right corner of the frame.
