This is a special chartered passenger train, organized by High Iron Travels. The train is headed toward the AAPRCO (the American Association of Private Rail Car Owners) convention in Spokane, WA. The train will take about a week getting there, however, making a few layovers along the way. The train will traverse the Montana Rail Link, crossing Bozeman Pass and Mullan Pass. The 21-car train is headed for a private rail car owner convention in Spokane, WA. Nice to see Amtrak lending out such a classy unit to lead the train. This would be one heck of a ride, traveling over very rare passenger mileage. Originally, I had planned to chase the train north to Cheyenne and beyond. The location is known as "Windy Gap", west of Granby. The reason it has taken me so long is because it isn't too often that I'm in this area in the late afternoon when the sun is just right. Getting the shot with fall colors was something I always considered to be "icing on the cake". Then, to throw a UP passenger special with perfect power in the shot and you can't go wrong! The train is awaiting a westbound UP passenger special, which had a bit of a delay due to a 15 MPH slow order that was a mile and a half long. It is sometimes easy to forget just how sharp a freshly painted unit looks, especially when you are used to seeing 15-20 years old power, covered in coal, dust, dirt, oil, and grime! Note the interesting antennas on the top of UP 2696. I can only assume that these are somehow related to PTC (Positive Train Control), but I am not certain. The conductor from the coal train gives a friendly wave to the engineer on the special. Notice anything unusual about the power on the coal train? You may have noticed that the second unit is an SD70M. It is exceptionally rare to find a unit with DC-traction motors on coal trains these days. There is some speculation that, with the closing of Burnham, UP has to grab whatever power they can find when a units with AC-traction fails. The train has made pretty good time on the trip west out of Denver, getting from North Yard to this point at Yarmony in about five hours. The train could have been here about 40 minutes sooner, had it not needed to stop at Tabernash to wait for the eastbound California Zephyr.
