Now this is quite the eclectic collection of passenger cars! This is a special chartered passenger train, organized by High Iron Travels. The train is headed toward the AAPRCO (the American Association of Private Rail Car Owners) convention in Spokane, WA. The train will take about a week getting there, however, making a few layovers along the way. The train will traverse the Montana Rail Link, crossing Bozeman Pass and Mullan Pass.

It is actually rather amazing just how many classic passenger cars are in the United States that are now privately owned! 21 of them were on this chartered train, headed for Spokane, WA for an AAPRCO (American Association of Private Rail Car Owners) convention. This would be one heck of a ride, traveling over very rare passenger mileage. Originally, I had planned to chase the train north to Cheyenne and beyond. However, another train caught my attention instead...see the next picture in the gallery!

This is a shot I've waited to get for years. The location is known as "Windy Gap", west of Granby. The reason it has taken me so long is because it isn't too often that I'm in this area in the late afternoon when the sun is just right. Getting the shot with fall colors was something I always considered to be "icing on the cake". Then, to throw a UP passenger special with perfect power in the shot and you can't go wrong!

A good roster shot of a brand new (less than a month old) ET44AH. It is sometimes easy to forget just how sharp a freshly painted unit looks, especially when you are used to seeing 15-20 years old power, covered in coal, dust, dirt, oil, and grime! Note the interesting antennas on the top of UP 2696. I can only assume that these are somehow related to PTC (Positive Train Control), but I am not certain.

An eastbound coal load, which just came off the Craig Branch, sits in the siding at Yarmony to wait for UP's Manager Special. The conductor from the coal train gives a friendly wave to the engineer on the special. Notice anything unusual about the power on the coal train? You may have noticed that the second unit is an SD70M. It is exceptionally rare to find a unit with DC-traction motors on coal trains these days. There is some speculation that, with the closing of Burnham, UP has to grab whatever power they can find when a units with AC-traction fails.
