Most of the canyons on the Moffat (South Boulder, Fraser, Gore, etc) are not accessible unless you have a drone or go on a very long hike! It is lucky that US-40 runs through Byers Canyon on the opposite side of the Colorado River from the tracks. It offers nice views like this one, in which an eastbound coal load is pulling through the sharp curves of the canyon.

Not too far east of Sulphur, the tracks cross from the north side of US-40 to the south side. It is a great spot to get a shot of eastbounds in the afternoon, such as this coal load. Westbound here on the other side of the bridge wouldn't be bad, other than a telephone pole with wires running right through the middle of the scene of oncoming trains.

We are a few miles west of Granby for this eastbound coal load. It just passed a clear intermediate and is also passing by the detector at mp 79.9. One of these Septembers, I really want to try to get up here in the morning for this same shot. All the trees in this scene glow a magnificent yellow during fall.

A westbound coal empty rolls downgrade on the main at Granby with seven units on the point. In the distance, you may notice a dog leg in the tracks. This is because, many years ago, Granby actually had two sidings! An east siding and a west siding. The east siding was on the north side of the main and the west siding was on the south side of the main. In the late 1980s, the two were connected. The east siding got welded rail and became the main. The old main on the east siding was connected to the west siding and became the extended siding.

At this time of year, the Colorado River is almost entirely frozen over in Byers Canyon. Looks like a white path through the canyon, which this westbound coal empty is following. All the power the train will need once it is loaded is coming along for the ride.

This westbound coal load got a restricting signal (flashing red) and the previous intermediate. The reason was due to an activated slide fence toward the west end of Byers Canyon. In this shot, a few rocks lay alongside the rails. The culprits? I'm not sure...

This westbound coal empty just passed a clear signal after previously having a restricting signal in Byers Canyon. that means he can let off the brake a bit and start to accelerate back up to track speed. Here, the train passes a grade crossing that leads to a shooting range in the summer months.

This westbound coal empty is slowing as it has an approach (yellow over red) signal at the east end of Kremmling. It will hold the main to meeting the eastbound Zephyr. The meet was well-planning by the dispatcher, as neither train had to come to a complete stop. It was a "rolling meet".

The eastbound Zephyr is clipping along at 70 MPH, which is track speed between Kremmling and Flat. The east switch of Troublesome was the location of a costly (and, sadly, deadly) derailment on Tuesday, May 15, 1956. The crew on an eastbound manifest missed an approach signal at west Troublesome. The train was meeting a westbound manifest, and the westbound was not yet clear of the east switch. The eastbound train realized the mistake too late, and ran the red signal and side-swiped the westbound train. This led to the creation of a short movie called "The Trouble at Troublesome". It was produced by Rio Grande to show to employees in training.

Two private cars bring up the rear of the Zephyr. 35 years ago, you could see cars like these two breezing by on the Moffat six days a week. They are veterans of the original California Zephyr, which ran until the formation of Amtrak in 1971.

The eastbound Zephyr has left 70 MPH track behind and is now slowing as it approaches a sharp curve at the west entrance to Byers Canyon. Due to the sudden speed change, UP has a detector set than, when an eastbound is detected, an automated voice comes on the radio reminding the train that they are approaching 20 MPH track.

Two veterans of the original California Zephyr roll by on the end of the modern California Zephyr. The first car is the Silver Rapids. The second car is the Silver Solarium, and it was owned by the CB&Q and made the journey on the end of the train many, many, times!

Looking down from US-40, we find a rift in the frozen ice covering icy cold waters of the Colorado River. We also find the private cars Silver Rapids and Silver Solarium as they make their way east through Byers Canyon on the back of the California Zephyr.

Note: The "Silver Rapids" apparently has been renamed the "Silver Smith"...either temporarily or permanently, I'm not sure...

The California Zephyr is nearing the east end of Byers Canyon, at which point it will be able to accelerate back up to 65 MPH as it continue from Sulphur on to Granby for its next station stop.
