The westbound Zephyr comes through the east control point at Plain with a trio of Amtrak California "Comment Cars" on the head end. The cars are returning to California after spending a few weeks away.

The cold (and oftentimes snowy) weather of the Winter has given way to a fantastically green Spring as the westbound Zephyr heads west at Plain. May has brought above average rainfall to the Denver area, which in turn has really greened up the fields. The Zephyr has three Amtrak California Comet cars in tow. I happened to shoot these cars two weeks ago when they were coming east on the Zephyr.

A look at one of the Amtrak California Comet cars, which is headed back to California after a couple weeks away...granted I am not entirely sure what the reason was for leaving.

An eastbound Provo-Lincoln manifest is rolling through a Form B work zone. The zone is a mile long and is in effect from MP 14.25 to MP 15.25 from 0700 to 1730. I am not sure exactly what work is going on.

Kickin' It Old School! A trio of C44-9Ws, two of which are still wearing the original Heritage scheme, lead an eastbound Provo-Lincoln between Rocky and Leyden. These Heritage C44-9Ws are sometimes referred to as "Goat Boats". The "Goat" is a reference to the scheme resembling Great Northern's scheme (which used a Goat in their logo). The "Boat" is a reference to GE's traditionally being referred to as "U-Boats" as GE's models once (primarily) because with the letter "U".

As May progresses and we get closer to June, afternoon thunderstorms will start to become more of the norm along the Colorado Plains. Today is no exception as clouds build up to the east as an eastbound BNSF manifest rolls by just 14 miles west of Denver.

An eastbound UP manifest departs Leyden, making its way toward North Yard. Ironically, the train would end up getting stuck at Tennyson Street (just west of C&S Junction) for over four hours, waiting to get in to North Yard! It's westbound counterpart was blocking the way, keeping the train stuck on Main 2.

An SD70M is sandwiched between a pair of ES44ACs as this MRONY approaches the grade crossing at Simms Street. UP may have changed the schedule of the MRONY a bit, as this eastbound departed Roper on a Sunday. Monday/Wednesday/Friday have been the norm lately.

Sometimes it pays to be lucky. The one specially painted unit that UP has on its roster that had eluded me was the breast cancer unit. That is, until this day! I had no clue UP 7400 was going to be the third unit on the MRONY and it took me completely by surprise as it rolled by. That'll cheer up any railfan's Monday!

Unfortunately, most of the fields in the Denver area spend much more of the year looking brownish and dead than they do green and alive. Fortunately, May is a time when they are typically the greenest! And passengers onboard the eastbound California Zephyr can enjoy the view as the train rolls by just west of Leyden, running right on time.
