The train is slowing for the grade crossing at MP 29.99 (County Road 22). A previous train reported that the main lights and gates were working, but the lights on one of the gates were broken off and hanging down. Consequently, an "XH" order was placed on the crossing. Canadian Pacific and Kansas City Southern merged earlier this year, creating CPKC (Canadian Pacific Kansas City), so it is not too surprising that the leased power has a unit from each road represented. That was after near-record rainfall in the Spring. With things drying out the snow long since melted, the waters have decreased as a northbound coal empty crosses alongside US-85 just north of La Salle. Granted, Kansas City Southern units don't make it to Colorado particularly often, but when they do, they are great to see. With the merger of CP and KCS, creating CPKC, both the Canadian Pacific and KCS paint schemes will be replaced by a new scheme. When first released, UP put in the largest single order (to that date) with 1,000 units. They followed that up over 400 additional orders. SD70Ms actually are not all that common in Colorado, with AC traction motor units being fall more common. Anyway, a Phase II SD70M, UP 3836, sits along in the north end of the yard in La Salle. UP built this new extension of the yard at La Salle (to the northeast of the existing yard) in 2019. This particular train is waiting for a crew to take it south. The train is currently stopped as a second train, a manifest, is stopped ahead of the local. They are both waiting on a northbound manifest that will take the siding. The train is following another southbound, sitting between switches ahead on the main. The local is hanging out of the north end of the siding.
