The westbound Zephyr comes through the east control point at Plain with a trio of Amtrak California "Comment Cars" on the head end. The cars are returning to California after spending a few weeks away.

The trucks on these Amtrak California cars is reminiscent of the ones found on the Ski Train cars in the Ansco days. However, unlike the Ski Train cars, these cars have traditional brakes and not disk brakes.

As the Zephyr stops for passengers in Glenwood Springs, we get a look at the side of one of four Amtrak California cars catching a ride on the Zephyr. In this case, this is The Valley Flyer.

Looking east from the Glenwood Springs depot, we see several Amtrak California that are catching a ride on the Zephyr from California to points east. This meant the power had to pull beyond the platform, much further than is typical for the stop here in Glenwood.

A longer-than-normal Zephyr (13 cars, compared to 9) heads east along I-70 in western Colorado. The train will pass through the town of New Castle before entering the west end of Glenwood Canyon. Because the train can go 79 MPH here, it would not be possible to catch up to the train again until Glenwood Springs.

The trees and grass are really starting to green up here at the start of May as the Eastbound Zephyr flies by at 79 MPH as it approaches a connector road that connects US-6 and the I-70 Frontage Road (across I-70).

The profile of the Eastbound Zephyr looks a little different today! That is because the train has a quartet of Amtrak California cars on the headend. While I do not know for sure where they were headed, I would speculate they are going to Beech Grove, IN. Amtrak has its main maintenance facility here.

The eastbound Zephyr accelerates up toward the posted trackspeed of 79 MPH as it is just east of the control point of Parachute (visible in the shot). This control point leads to a small BNSF yard that was once used for soda ash trains out of the plant at Parachute. Beyond that is the siding of Grand Valley, so named for this grand (and wide) valley the tracks run through here.

The Zephyr has almost completed the (near) 36 miles trip over the Dotsero Cutoff from Bond to Dotsero. After Dotsero, the train will enter in to Glenwood Canyon before making a 15 minute station stop at Glenwood Springs and then continue west on its journey.

After meeting its eastbound counterpart, the westbound Zephyr rolls through the siding at Range. Restricted to 30 MPH through the siding, the train will accelerate back up to about 50 MPH once it clears the west switch.

Even though the Winter Park Express stopped running a month earlier, it would appear that at least one of the Superliners used on the train still has its "wrap" (a sponsorship by Lyft) on it! This coach is on the Eastbound Zephyr, meeting its counterpart at Range.

The Westbound Zephyr glides downhill parallel to the Colorado River about two miles west of the siding of Dell. It's another nine miles (roughly) to the next siding of Range. Even though the Dotsero Cutoff is nearly 36 miles long, there are only two sidings in that stretch! To use an east slope analogy, that is like going from North Yard to Rollins with only two sidings!

The siding of Dell is a difficult one to shoot as it is in a canyon that is secluded from the road. However, there is a nice shot of the tracks a few miles west of Dell. Here, the Zephyr comes in to view through an S-Curve.

About three miles east of the siding of Dell, on the Dotsero Cutoff, we find the westbound Zephyr as it continues to follow the Colorado River. The train is crossing over a small trestle for Teepee Creek, which joins the Colorado here.

This was, by far, my favorite shot of the day on this particular outing. This is a shot I have wanted to get for years, but every time I make it up to this spot, either the weather or the trains are not cooperating. Today, however, the skies are crystal clear as the Westbound Zephyr approaches the east portal of Tunnel 39 and the start of Little Gore Canyon along the Colorado River.
