The California Zephyr rolls through scenic Byers Canyon at 25 MPH. There are multiple slide fences throughout Byers Canyon. These fences protected the tracks from falling rocks. And, if a large rock breaks one of the wires, the dispatcher is notified and signals around the break drop to restricting.

Although the skies are mostly overcast, a brief break allowed for some great sunlight on the westbound Zephyr as it cruises along west of Granby! AMTK 184, the Phase 4 Heritage Unit, leads the way.

AMTK 184 leads the westbound Zephyr past the "Granby, CO" station sign that Amtrak has put up along the platform. The engineer gives a friendly wave out the front window of the cab.

The westbound Zephyr slows as it approaches the depot at Granby. Unlike the station stop at Fraser, which is about 10 minutes and gives passengers a chance to step off the train, the stop in Granby is much shorter. Just long enough to let passengers off that are staying and let passengers on that are coming!

The past meets the even-more-distant past! AMTK 184 is on the California Zephyr and wears the Phase 4 Heritage scheme. This is an adaptation of the relatively short-lived Phase 4 paint scheme that Amtrak used for about six years between 1999 and 2005. AMTK 156 wears the Phase 1 Heritage scheme. This is an adaptation of the "Bloody Nose" or "Pointless Arrow" scheme. This was the first official scheme that Amtrak had, and was used for about ten years, from 1971 to 1981.

Highball Fraser! With its station stop complete and all passengers back on board, the two P42DCs on the point of the California Zephyr throttle up and start pulling west.

Two blasts on the horn of AMTK 184 inform the passengers on the platform at Fraser that it is time to board the train. The Zephyr will be headed west in about two minutes. In the distance, you can see the slopes at Winter Park, for which the Winter Park Express brought a train load of passengers up to.

Both the engineer and conductor on the westbound Zephyr are very friendly and have a chat about the upcoming Super Bowl between the New England Patriots and the Philadelphia Eagles. They have a few more minutes to kill before it is time to highball Fraser and continue on the journey west to Grand Junction.

The Winter Park Express sits quietly in the siding at Fraser. Here it will sit for the next six hours, its passengers hopefully shredding up the slopes at the Winter Park Ski Resort a few miles to the east.

With the Winter Park Express now tied down in the siding at Fraser for the day, the head conductor for the train is walking along the platform at Fraser. He is now off duty for the next four hours or so.

Now this is just a plain lucky day! Two of Amtrak's four heritage units (P42DCs that is) happened to be in Fraser at the same time. AMTK 156 is on the point of the eastbound Winter Park Express while AMTK 184 is on the point of the westbound California Zephyr.

It's a long trip from Denver to Grand Junction, so the engineer and conductor in the cab could certainly use a little coffee to keep them going! Fortunately, the Lounge Car was more than happy to oblige. The engineer hands the coffee up to the conductor.

The westbound Zephyr is slowly to a stop along the platform at Fraser. Here, the train will pause for 10 minutes or so to give passengers a chance to stretch their legs and, for those that smoke, to light one up as the Zephyr is entirely a non-smoking train.

With the Winter Park Express put back together, the train will now wait for the next 5-6 hours here on the siding at Fraser. Note the Amtrak sign to the right denoting the station.
