Introducing the ET44C4. If you are looking at this picture in 2025, then this is most likely a common site. However, here in 2015, this was the first production version of this model I saw in person. BNSF took delivery of roughly 100 units in 2015. The unit is Tier 4 compliant and, like the ES44C4, it is an A1A-A1A unit.

What would think of this as the view from the end of your driveway!? Longmont residents that live on Atwood Street get exactly that. A northbound manifest proceeds down the median, offering a fair amount of horn when approaching each cross street.

Clear of the main track, this BNSF local is backing toward the yard at Longmont. Once there, the crew will break the train across two tracks and tie down for the night.

Running from Denver to Cheyenne (or vice versa) on the Front Range Sub takes time. In addition to the lack of signals, there are multiple stretches of track that have reduced speeds. Atwood Street in Longmont is one of those. The track run down the median of the street, which one direction running on either side. Here, a local heads south down said median.

A trio of four axle GEs bring a local south down Atwood Street in Longmont. The power is entirely B40-8s, with two being the wide cab variety. The train just finished switching in Loveland and, after switching a little bit more in Longmont, the train will tie up.

A northbound Denver, CO to Laurel, MT manifest, with a trio of elephant-style GEs for power, crosses the South Siding Switch of Boulder. I had originally wanted to get this shot more toward the middle of the siding, but a string of empty hoppers (that delivered coal to the Valmont Power Plant) blocked that plan.

My daughter Jaina came with me on this particular afternoon to check out action on the Front Range Sub. The conductor saw her with a camera and gave a friendly wave. You may notice the second unit has a bit of a different look to it. This is the first production ET44C4 I've seen! The ET44C4 is GE's Tier 4 compliant engine and, at the time of this photo, the only (new) locomotive legal to sell in the United States.

BNSF's daily Denver, CO to Laurel, MT mixed freight crosses (the new) Brainard Drive just north (geographically west) of the new North Siding Switch of Broomfield. The new extension to the siding is now complete and fully in service. There are no grade crossing anywhere along the siding at Broomfield now.

BNSF's Buck Local sports some nice power as its proceeds north back toward Longmont. The local has completed switching on the Lafayette Branch. The empty centerbeam flats at the back of the train were switched out from Universal Forest Products and Lafayette Lumber Company. Both B40-8Ws were originally delivered to Santa Fe in Warbonnet colors. One was repainted to Heritage 2, the other had a very interesting "BNSF" patch job on the long hood!

With its train reassembled, the Buck Local departs from Broomfield northbound heading back toward Longmont. Traffic is light on the Front Range Sub on this day. The local has a "Box 4" to work between MP 13 and MP 45. Basically, the train can move in either direction anywhere over that 32 mile stretch of track!

In addition to the Buck Local, this picture also does a nice job of capturing the configuration of trackwork at Broomfield. The train is running through a switch that exists from the Lafayette Branch on to the siding. The new siding extension, which has just been ballasted, can be seen on the left side of the picture. It continue on for another 3,800 feet or so to the north. The track in the foreground is the main. In the distance, you can see the brakeman from the Buck Local preparing to align the north switch of Broomfield for the siding.

A pair of (ex-Santa Fe) B40-8Ws escort the Buck Local toward the end of the Lafayette Branch. In the foreground, you can see the Front Range Sub mainline, and the freshly-ballasted Broomfield siding. This is an extension of the siding to the north, not yet in service.

After switching at a handful of industries on the (roughly) 4 1/2 mile long Lafayette Branch, the Buck Local is coming around the bend back toward the siding of Broomfield. The pair of B40-8Ws are huffing out a bit of exhaust!

An eastbound BNSF Officer's Special, with a single ES44DC for power, approaches the Simms Street grade crossing. In the last 36 hours, the train traversed the entire Rio Grande main line between Salt Lake City and Denver! The train tied up for the night in Grand Junction the night prior to this picture.
