UP 4014 coughs up a bit of smoke from the stack as the train moves backward at a slow speed, moving in to the yard at 36th street. The train will be on display here tomorrow before heading back to Cheyenne to complete the trip on Tuesday.

UP 4014 and UP 4015 back across I-70, which is now in a trench after spending about 50 years crossing above these tracks on a bridge. Work to drop I-70 in to a trench is about 50% complete. Cars now in the trench are likely oblivious to the largest steam engine in US history above them!

At the north end of UP's 36th Street Yard, UP 4014 sits and waits for some switches behind it to be thrown. The train just came off the Limon Sub and turned north toward the Greeley Sub (which it will depart on come Tuesday). For now, after the switches have been thrown, the train will back down in to the yard.

Holy construction! For 50 years, I-70 has crossed through the east part of Denver on a bridge known as the "elevated deck". With that bridge aging, it was apparent it would need to be replaced. The Colorado Department of Transportation instead decided to drop I-70 in to a trench and knock down the elevated deck. A small piece of the elevated deck that hasn't been torn down is still visit to the right of the Purina factory. Meanwhile, UP 4014 stops across I-70 on new tracks and a new bridge at the north end of 36th Street Yard, waiting to back in.

A nice overview of the Colorado Railroad Museum in Golden. As you can see, there aren't many tracks will space available for future donations. The track that wraps around the outside is used for active steam and "Galloping Goose" runs periodically throughout the year.

This view of the front of DRGW 5401 at the Colorado Railroad Museum really caught my eye. Not only does the spartan cab of the Tunnel Motor look fantastic, but see the Rio Grande fly letters to the right on a steam tender and to the left on GP30 DRGW 3011 is just great!

If you look inside the cab of DRGW 5401, you'll note that there is still a sticker at the back indicating the last number it had when it was in active service on UP's roster: UP 9871.

Almost immediately after the Colorado Railroad Museum moved DRGW 5401 into the museum facility, it's number boards were put back in with the correct numbers and its MARS and class lights were fully restored.

The engineer's side of DRGW 3011 has been slightly more exposed to the elements than the conductor's side at the Colorado Railroad Museum. Consequently, the colors have faded and the rust is far more apparent on the engineer's side of the old gal.

The Colorado Railroad Museum got DRGW 3011, a GP30, from UP several decades ago. The unit has been sitting on the east side of the roadhouse for most of that time. However, just this summer, it was moved to a new location. Rumor has it that restoration of the unit might be starting soon!

The Colorado Railroad Museum has managed to preserve a lot of classic equipment, including a great collection of Rio Grande equipment. Sitting around the turntable is an SD40T-2 (DRGW 5401) and a GP30 (DRGW 3011).

A nice, elevated look at UP 1979 and the viewing area set up by UP for its employees at North Yard. Behind the unit, we find only a handful of units around the fueling and sanding racks. The yard itself looks to be a bit on the empty side. However, it is encouraging to see an empty coal train sitting on yard track 1!

UP set ups. pretty good viewing area for the "We Are ONE" unit, UP 1979 here at North Yard in Denver. A very large tent with chairs was set up, offering some shade. Employees are welcome to come over and check out the unit when they have a break or at the start or end of their shift. Or even if they are off duty and just want to make the haul down to the yard to check it out.

The nose of UP 1979 is definitely rather creative! Behind UP's shield and wings is an orange and yellow heart, with the pink and green bands wrapping around the base from the sides of the nose. Overall, a pretty creative design to be sure! The unit is on display here for UP employees in Denver, not too far from the fuel and sand racks.
