The train is making good time, and shouldn't have to stop again until reaching BNSF's North Yard in Fort Collins. The entire track layout throughout Longmont is likely one of the reasons BNSF runs as few trains as they do on the Front Range Sub. With the train nearing the north end of the street, it can increase its speed a bit. It would be pretty fascinating to live on Atwood Street. Most of the time, a relatively quiet residential street. The fact that the Front Range Sub carries very little through traffic these days definitely works to the benefit of this northbound. It is the only train on the line for at least a 230-mile stretch! Both are now further north than they previously were, eliminating two grade crossing between switches, including the very busy Nickel Street grade crossing. Now, the siding is basically the same length, but there are no grade crossing blocked when a train is stopped here. This northbound has just received a new warrant, and is pulling across the Brainard grade crossing, which was also relocated at the same time to ensure no grade crossing where between switches on the siding. The Front Range Sub is still operated using track warrants, meaning crew have to manually throw all switches at sidings. To save time, crews are not required to realign switches for the main line. So, when a meet happen, the train will take the siding or hold the main depending on how the switch is aligned, regardless of how close or far away the train being met is to the siding. BNSF's Denver-Laurel has a trio of C44-9Ws, all still wearing Heritage 2 paint. The train is passing by Lower Church Lake (which hasn't actually been a lake in a few years; it is all dried up) and approaching the US-36 underpass. It was right at this location when, in 1985, northbound and southbound Burlington Northern trains collided head on, melting the steel of the bridge. I was happy this worked out as it has been quite a while since I've done any chasing on the Front Range Sub. The sub tends to be fairly dead most of the time. It carries way less traffic than the Moffat does. Here, the 8,000+ foot long manifest is just a few miles south of the south switch of Broomfield in Westminster. However, this is not that same SD70M. When Union Pacific chose an SD70M to repaint as UP 1616 (the Abraham Lincoln unit), they chose to repaint UP 4015. About a year ago, UP decided to renumber UP 4392 as a "new" UP 4015. It received a fresh paint of coat in UP's newest scheme to go along with its new number. On this Sunday morning, it was sitting amongst a string of half dozen SD70Ms, all waiting to head to Cheyenne. The other SD70Ms are likely headed for long term storage. UP 4015 is probably just headed back to the roundhouse in Cheyenne to serve with UP 4014 again in the future. I always appreciate how good units look in fresh paint! I'm not sure when it arrived, but I would guess it was probably on a train like the MNPNY, likely arriving in the dark.
