The last of the unpatched Rio Grande units on UP's roster. Nearly 20 years after the Rio Grande/Espee merger, this last SD40T-2 is more than likely making its last-ever trip across the Moffat. It is tentatively scheduled for retirement in Cheyenne...time will tell. There is also a rumor that it might be added to UP's heritage fleet (along with the DDA40X, E9's and Steam units), possibly even to be refurbished!? For the time being, it has clearly seen better days. Note that both number boards have been removed from the unit...never a good sign!

Seeing how these old signals are quickly on their way out, I wanted to make sure I got a shot of them before they inevitably disappear. In the pre-UP era, that lower target on the signal on the right would display a lunar aspect, indicating a grade (restricting) signal. Today, the yellow G-Plate has been added (indicating a grade signal), and the lower target displays yellow, for a yellow-over-yellow aspect, if a train is going in the hole at Leyden (Approach Diverging).
