Interesting that 5371 would be the final Rio Grande unit left in the world, after 5771 (a single-digit difference!) was the final F9A to be retired off the roster 24 years prior in 1984. The last-remaining (unpatched) Rio Grande unit on UP's roster crosses over the bridge (still lettered for Rio Grande) at York Street on the Belt Industrial Lead. 5371 is headed toward Cheyenne, more than likely to be retired. This is a shot looking in between two buildings near the control point at Broadway. Even though the buildings obscure a lot of the engine, there is no armour yellow in the shot! The unit was idling, although it would not load (so it couldn't work to pull the train). other than the missing number boards, not a bad sight at all! The train has been having some rear-end device issues, and it is also waiting for a meeting with a southbound coal empty coming off the Greeley line. There is a lot of power for the train as it is 130 cars and over 7,300 feet long! Note that DRGW 5371 is the 6th unit, being moved to Cheyenne, most likely for retirement. Quite possibly for the final time, DRGW 5371 heads east across the Moffat. It is now just 10 miles away from North Yard. Where it will head from there is anyone's guess (at least as of the time of this photo!). Whatever happens, hopefully it will be preserved if not restored... Nearly 20 years after the Rio Grande/Espee merger, this last SD40T-2 is more than likely making its last-ever trip across the Moffat. It is tentatively scheduled for retirement in Cheyenne...time will tell. There is also a rumor that it might be added to UP's heritage fleet (along with the DDA40X, E9's and Steam units), possibly even to be refurbished!? For the time being, it has clearly seen better days. Note that both number boards have been removed from the unit...never a good sign! There is an interesting consist on this train. It is led by an AC4400CW (UP 6844), an SD70ACe (UP 8336), an SD60M (UP 2292), an SD40-2 (UP 3574) and none other than the last Grande SD40T-2, DRGW 5371.
