The last of the unpatched Rio Grande units on UP's roster. Nearly 20 years after the Rio Grande/Espee merger, this last SD40T-2 is more than likely making its last-ever trip across the Moffat. It is tentatively scheduled for retirement in Cheyenne...time will tell. There is also a rumor that it might be added to UP's heritage fleet (along with the DDA40X, E9's and Steam units), possibly even to be refurbished!? For the time being, it has clearly seen better days. Note that both number boards have been removed from the unit...never a good sign!

Just east of Barbara's Gulch, the MRONY-04 is heading east on clear signals. There is an interesting consist on this train. It is led by an AC4400CW (UP 6844), an SD70ACe (UP 8336), an SD60M (UP 2292), an SD40-2 (UP 3574) and none other than the last Grande SD40T-2, DRGW 5371.

Perhaps a view never again to be repeated, DRGW 5371 returns to Colorado as the fifth of five units on the MRONY-04. 5371 is supposed to be retired soon, perhaps after this trip. The train is rounding Big Ten Curve in between Clay and Rocky.

Yard Shots Union Pacific, Rio Grande
It's been awhile since I've seen the Rio Grande Heritage Unit in daylight! Even though it is only sitting in the yard, I decided to go ahead and add a shot. The unit is continuing to run nights on the MNYPU/MPUNY between Denver and Pueblo.

Almost twenty years after the end of the Rio Grande - and even twelve years after the Espee/UP merger - it is nice to see UP making an effort to keep (former) Grande power on (former) Grande rails. Two of the three geeps on this Rocky Local are former Grande units. In fact, note that UP 1359 still has its complete light package

The Rocky Local makes its way east in some fantastic afternoon light! You can almost imagine this shot being taken twenty years sooner. Even with the UP patch on the nose, I still love seeing tiger stripes coming toward the camera.

Yard Shots Rio Grande
While waiting for a westbound, I came across this classic Rio Grande Jordan Spread - AX-41 - sitting in the storage yard at the north end of North Yard. As far as I know, the spreader hasn't moved since the beginning of the New Year when it was taken to Kansas to help clear the Limon Sub.

The power for the South Local and the Rocky (West) Local sits on the Third Rail at North Yard. I'll never pass up an opportunity to get a shot of a Rio Grande (even if it is patched) unit sitting in the falling snow!

Everything a great train photo needs...except, of course, for the train! After the sun dipped behind the mountains, the clouds came alive with a wonderful array of oranges turning to pinks. Note the Denver skyline in the distance. A westbound did wind up coming through here about 10 minutes after I took this shot. By then, the color from the clouds had gone.

Yard Shots Union Pacific, Rio Grande
The current power for the South Local and the Rocky Local sits near the yard office in North Yard. This is very close to the spot that Rio Grande regularly kept a pair of GP30s. Case-in-point is this photo from 1988. This is the oldest picture that I personally shot that I have on my site! I had just turned nine years old had a point-and-shoot camera for this particular shot.

Yard Shots Union Pacific, Rio Grande
It's been years since I last recalling seeing class lights illuminated on a unit, but UP 1344 just happened to have (white) class lights fired up while sitting in the yard at UP's 36th Street in Denver. It was nearly two years ago (Dec 17, 2005) that DRGW 3121 was patched and changed to UP 1344.

Seeing how these old signals are quickly on their way out, I wanted to make sure I got a shot of them before they inevitably disappear. In the pre-UP era, that lower target on the signal on the right would display a lunar aspect, indicating a grade (restricting) signal. Today, the yellow G-Plate has been added (indicating a grade signal), and the lower target displays yellow, for a yellow-over-yellow aspect, if a train is going in the hole at Leyden (Approach Diverging).

A closeup shot of the axle-mounted generator on Rio Grande caboose 01490. The more modern cabooses took advantage of the turning of the wheels to turn a generator to charge the batteries for power. I don't know if the generator still works, but the equipment to power it on the outside is still in place.

In this view of caboose DRGW 01490, you can see a bit of the original one-stripe scheme coming through the black "age" of the caboose. Some have speculated that the P-Burg local (running west out of P-Burg) will use the caboose for its moves. Reportedly, the interior of the caboose has been revamped, although the emergency brake valve has been removed.

1977 or 2007!? It may be a bit grungy and the original paint may be almost completely covered, but this is in fact DRGW 01490. A steel caboose built in August 1959. The caboose was on the back of the MNYPH-18, tied down on the Arvada Siding a few miles west of North Yard. The caboose is going to Phippsburg, the exact reason is not known.
