It's another nine miles (roughly) to the next siding of Range. Even though the Dotsero Cutoff is nearly 36 miles long, there are only two sidings in that stretch! However, there is a nice shot of the tracks a few miles west of Dell. Here, the Zephyr comes in to view through an S-Curve. This is a shot I have wanted to get for years, but every time I make it up to this spot, either the weather or the trains are not cooperating. Today, however, the skies are crystal clear as the Westbound Zephyr approaches the east portal of Tunnel 39 and the start of Little Gore Canyon along the Colorado River. This particular perspective requires a little bit of hiking down to an overlook from Trough Road. Not a bad hike at all...less than five minutes. And well worth it, I might add! This stretch of track is between Gore Canyon and Little Gore Canyon. The tracks curve back and forth as they follow the Colorado River. Freight trains can speed up to 60 MPH, while passenger trains such as the Zephyr are able to move up to 70 MPH. This stretch of track between Byers Canyon and Kremmling is the fastest the Zephyr goes between Denver and Glenwood Springs. With the rails on the north side of the Colorado River, US-40 follows along on the south side of the river. Here, the Zephyr is seen from the slightly higher angle of the highway. The train had been going around 55 MPH since Granby, but had to slow down to 25 MPH through the canyon. On the opposite side, the Zephyr will be able to accelerate back up to 70 MPH! The lighting is not ideal for the westbound Zephyr, but it could be worse. It offers a nice view of the train in front of the Continental Divide in the distance. The consist of the Zephyr is pretty typical for the Spring. There is a transition sleeper (for the crew), two sleepers, a diner, a lounge car, and three coaches on the tail end.
