BNSF's Butte Sub west of Alliance over Crawford Hill is almost entirely two main tracks. Of the 110 miles, 87 miles is two main tracks. There is a nine mile stretch of single track between Berea and Hemingford. Here, an eastbound coal load rolls over the hills, going from single track to Main 2 at Berea.

Along with BNSF 1776, BNSF painted a second ES44AH and numbered it 2026. In 1976, for the bicentennial, many railroads painted two units in red, white, and blue and numbered them 1776 and 1976.

BNSF 1776 leads a mix of former Burlington Northern and Santa Fe passenger equipment. The train is headed west on Main 1. It will need to meet a coal load at Berea, where two main tracks drop to a single track, so it is not moving at track speed.

In my opinion, BNSF designed a really classy paint scheme to apply to BNSF 1776. Railroads created special schemes for a few units to celebrate the bicentennial in 1976, so it was cool to see them do the same thing for the semiquincentennial in 2026.

A BNSF "H" train, the "H" indicating this is a High Priority Manifest. Finding a pair of Kansas City Southern units on the head end was a pretty great bonus to the train itself. The train is just a few miles away from the start of two main tracks at Berea.

An ES44C4 and an ES44AC lead a westbound unit grain train, sometimes referred to as an "earthworm", westbound along a fantastically green field just outside Hemingford, NE. Two main tracks start at Hemingford and this train will take Main 1 west up and over Crawford Hill. An afternoon storm is building in the distance.

A westbound grain train is on a eight mile stretch of single track between Berea and Hemingford. A manifest is waiting on Main 2 at Hemingford, about a mile ahead, for the grain train. Two coal loads are stacked up behind the manifest, too.

The lead unit here, BNSF 4252, is a Tier 4 "credit unit". BNSF had some emissions credits saved up that allowed them to purchase some Tier 3 units even after the Tier 4 deadline.
