On the last day of 2014, a crew takes the westbound Beer Train slowly toward Golden. The train is limited to 10 MPH through this section of track. There is a lot of construction happening here as part of the new commuter line (the Gold Line). Note the polls that will be part of the catenary once the Gold Line opens in 2016.

Construction crews have started laying the second track for Gold Line. While the existing track has been open for awhile - and is being used by BNSF for the time being - the second track is not yet active.

The westbound Beer Run has some pretty great power on it as it approaches Parfet Street in Arvada. This scene won't be possible in a year or two. The Beer Run is running on what will become one of the two main tracks of the Gold Line. You can see the second commuter track, covered with snow, to the right of the train.

The Beer Run has a colorful consist here, with two CIT Rail Resource leasors and a Warbonnet C48-8W. The train is stopped and tied down just east of Lamar Street, awaiting a crew to take it the rest of the way to Golden. Note the heavy construction also happening in the area. One of the voter-approved commuter lines (the "Gold Line") will run parallel to the BNSF Golden Sub through Arvada out to Wheat Ridge. Voters approved the construction of the line (as well as several others) in 2004. It will be another two years before commuter trains are running here, as the line is scheduled to open in 2016.

BNSF needed to get the Beer Run out of the yard (as it was taking up two tracks) to clear room. But the train was not yet ready to head west all the way to Golden. Instead, a crew brought the train as far as Lamar Street, where it was tied down. Lamar Street (as you can tell from this shot) is currently closed as construction progresses on the new Gold Line commuter tracks, set to open in 2016.

After crossing Miller Street, the Beer Run pulls slowly west on the Golden Sub. If you look close, you can see the tracks curve to the right just ahead. BNSF's track was ripped out here (the track had been straight) due to RTD Gold Line (commuter rail) construction. The track the train is using in the mean time is one of the commuter rail tracks. BNSF's track will be move further south, away from the commuter rail tracks. Once put back in, BNSF will stop using the commuter rail track.

Due to the increased power demands BNSF has had, some older power and some lease power have appeared on the Beer Run! As seen here, a great looking SD60M is working the train. Construction here is for the RTD Gold Line (Commuter Rail) set to open in 2016. The train is winding through a shoofly as a result of the construction.

Even though Soo never ran in (or really anywhere near) Colorado, for some reason the paint scheme is very nostalgic for me. I do seem to recall having an HO model in the Soo scheme, so maybe that is why! Here, this former Soo SD60 is now a CEFX leaser. BNSF is utilizing its services to free up its own (more modern) power in road service.

A bright blue CEFX SD40-2 leaser idles away as the second of four units on the Beer Run. The train is sitting at Tennyson Street awaiting a fresh crew.

It had been quite some time since I last saw an SD60M prior to seeing BNSF 8167 on the Beer Run here. The units had been put in storage a few years earlier. However, with a huge increase in power demand, BNSF has reactivated them and put them to work! The paint on this particular SD60M looks pretty great, considering its age.

Since BNSF has been suffering from a bit of a power shortage lately, the result has been some very colorful power showing up in various places. The power on the Beer Run between Denver and Golden is no exception! A former Soo (now CEFX) SD60 leaser, a CEFX SD40-2 leaser, a BNSF SD60M, and a BNSF SD40-2 make for a great (orange-free) consist! The train is sitting near Tennyson Street, waiting for a recrew.

It is something of a gloomy day out as a cold front moves in to the Denver area. The front would produce a light dusting of snow overnight. In the meantime, an ES44DC and a C44-9W wait at a red signal at Tennyson Street. The train, with 14 boxcars loaded with Coors beer on the point, is waiting for maintenance at C&S Junction to clear up in order to continue east in to the yard.

This unit started life as an SD45-2 (note the length of the long hood). Not long ago, it went through a rebuild program and is now designated as an SD45-2R. The unit is essentially an SD40-2 (20-cylinder prime mover has been replaced with a 16-cylinder prime mover). Mote that the radiator fans have been replaced and no longer have the tell-tale gaps of the SD45-2. The radiator grill sill maintains its original length, giving the back of the unit a bit of an interesting look.

Depending on who you ask, you can definitely hear a lot of different opinions regarding BNSF's "New Image" or "Swoosh" scheme. Some will say they love. Others will say they hate it. Personally, while it isn't my favorite scheme by a long shot, it has grown on me over the last ten years. I can at least say that I do prefer it to the Heritage 2 scheme. Here, a sharp looking SD40-2, which has been repainted in the New Image scheme, crosses Miller Street along Ridge Road. The grade crossing here was just installed about eight months earlier. Prior to that, the crossing only had cross bucks!

BNSF's Golden Switch sits just west of Miller Street, waiting for clearance to proceed east through a Form B. Two new bridges are being constructed over Kipling Pkwy as part of the RTD Gold Line Commuter Rail project. In fact, you may notice the train swing to the right in the distance (toward the left side of the frame). The train is temporarily using a future commuter track while BNSFs tracks are shifted.
