This GP38-2 was originally delivered to Missouri Pacific in February 1980 (as MP 2195). One pretty reliable tip that this unit was originally Missouri Pacific is the lack of dynamic brakes. Missouri Pacific and Katy (MKT), both plains railroads, had quite a few units without dynamic brakes. This saved money in the initial purchase and in maintenance costs.

This C44ACM is sporting UP's newest paint scheme, without a large flag on the long hood and without nose wings. The unit was recently rebuilt from the AC4400CW it was delivered to UP as in February 2001. The unit will be power on the MNYNP, manifest from North Yard to North Platte.

This snoot-nose SD40N is waiting to head to North Platte, NE, probably for its 92-day FRA inspection. This particular unit was originally delivered in March 1975. This unit has spent its entire life in yellow and gray paint, as it was indeed originally delivered to UP.

UP 1983 is the UP heritage unit I have captured the least. I was happy I had the chance to get a few shots on this December afternoon as the unit sat in North Yard, waiting to head to North Platte, NE. Hard to believe that it has been nearly 20 years since the UP heritage fleet was unveiled.

One of UP's six heritage units, the Western Pacific unit (UP 1983) was hanging out in North Yard this afternoon. The unit cannot be run on a train as its 92-day FRA inspection is due. The unit will be transported (dead-in-consist) to North Platte so its 92-day inspection can be completed again.

UP 6891 is sporting the newest UP paint scheme, which has done away with wings on the nose and returned to the simple UP shield. It is the sole DPU on the tail end of a 6,000-foot MGJNY manifest, rolling east on the main at Leyden.

A single C44ACM brings up the tail end of UP's MGJNY in a snowy scene just west of Leyden. UP 6891 was originally UP 7003, and was one of a handful of AC6000CWs from the mid-90s when 6000 horsepower was a goal UP gave both EMD and GE. The 6000 horsepower units did not work out from either manufacturer, and 4400 horsepower became the standard that still remains as the standard today, roughly 30 years later.

UP's MGJNY is crossing over Indiana Street, just west of the west switch of Leyden. At some point, once funding becomes available, this scene will change a bit as there is a push to widen Indiana Street to four lanes. That will necessitate the rebuilding of the bridge to accommodate four lanes. Of note, the second unit (UP 6331) is used to the rails as it was once SP 281!

After an overnight and morning storm, the clouds cleared out and the sun has already started to melt away the fresh powder. However, there is still plenty on the ground as UP's MGJNY approaches the west switch of Leyden.

UP's only-remaining manifest that runs on the Moffat runs six days a week. The train alternates west and east every other day, with one day where it doesn't run at all. The train runs from North Yard to Grand Junction and back. Here, the eastbound version has five units on the point. The train is right around 6,000 feet long.

UP's Green River, WY to North Yard manifest has completed its journey on the Greeley Sub and is pulling into Track 6 in North Yard off the Belt Line. The train is too long to entirely fit on Track 6, so it will split in half, the back half being shoved into Track 5. The conductor is currently riding on the front platform, keeping a close eye on switches to ensure they are properly aligned.

DRGW 1357 sits waiting for its next assignment, most likely as power on a local. In the distance, an SD40N and a GP38N also wait for their next assignment, but as remote control yard power for switching in North Yard. UP 1357 was originally DRGW 3102. Indeed, you can clearly see where its MARS light was once located, as well as the class lights on the nose.

A pair of GP40-2s sit near the yard office in North Yard, awaiting their next assignment. Neither of these geeps started life as Union Pacific units. The further unit, UP 1506 was SP 7128 when UP merged with Espee. However, the units history dates further back. It was originally delivered to the Baltimore and Ohio in September 1971 as B&O 4011! UP 1357, on the other hand, was delivered to Rio Grande in April 1972 as DRGW 3102.

A GP38-2 (now a GP38N) and an SD40-2 (now an SD40N) sit idly in North Yard. These units are the currently power used for switching cars in the yard. At the moment, no cars need to be switched! Without knowing anything about the numbering scheme for UP's roster or specific history of units, I can guarantee that this GP38-2 is either of Missouri Pacific or MKT heritage. How? Note that it lacks dynamic brakes. Missouri Pacific and MKT, both being plains railroads, ordered some units without any dynamic brakes. In this case, this was originally MP 2188, delivered to Missouri Pacific in February 1980, just shy of three years before UP would take over MP.

While the lighting is not fantastic for this shot, I could not resist getting a shot of this UP GP60. My favorite two four axle units are the GP30 and the GP60, so anytime I come across either, I have to try for a shot. This guy was built in September 1989 and was delivered to Espee as a Cotton Belt unit!
