UP's daily MNYPU typically runs over the Joint Line at night, making it extremely hard to catch any UP action on the Joint Line in daylight. For whatever reason, the train was not called until 7am on this Sunday, so the train is rolling south on Main 1 along Hogan's Alley. Unfortunately, a broken rail south of Littleton on Main 1 has all traffic stopped, and the train will hold here on Main 1 for an hour or so until the rail can be repaired.

At Prospect Jct, a southbound UP manifest is on Main 1, heading south toward the Joint Line. Meanwhile, a UP yard transfer heading for BNSF's 31st Street Yard has left Main 2 (and left CTC limits) as it heads toward the BNSF to deliver two units and a nearly a mile of cars.

After sitting still at Prospect Jct for nearly 90 minutes, this UP manifest is finally on the move southbound. A broken rail south of Littleton on Main 1 has all southbound trains stopped. This train, the MNYPU, typically runs on the Joint Line overnight in the dark, so catching it in daylight is a rare opportunity.

Here we are at milepost 0 here at CP DS000 (Prospect Jct). Mileposts start counting up on the Moffat Tunnel Sub (the way the camera is looking). Mileposts also start counting up south on the Joint line (behind the camera). UP's MNYPU is currently stopped on Main 1 just north of the signal protecting Prospect Jct. You can clearly still see the switch is bent toward Main 2 on the empty track. The westbound Zephyr came through here about 25 minutes earlier.

Yard Shots Montana Rail Link, Union Pacific
A pair of UP units back down the inbound lead at the south end of North Yard with a BNSF ES44AC and an MRL SD70ACe. This is part of a yard transfer that will move a block of cars from UP over to BNSF to facilitate customer needs. The BNSF and MRL units are being returned to BNSF after some power sharing on UP. The train on the outbound lead on the next track over is UP's daily MNYPU, which runs from North Yard to Pueblo, CO.

For the past several weeks (maybe even a couple months), these five covered hoppers have been hanging out near the southern end of the Rocky Flats Industrial Lead. I'm not sure why they are here...it seems that the west local has not been running to deliver or pick up cars from the aggregate plant at the north end of the spur.

Two DPUs bring up the tail end of this westbound oil train in Barbara's Gulch. Oil trains have become the new coal trains on the Moffat. While the oil trains are still not nearly as plentiful as coal trains once were, you can pretty well count on seeing a couple of them in any 24 hour period. This one is going to take the siding at Plain and wait for about 90 minutes for the eastbound Zephyr. DS-378 does not want to risk trying to make it to Cliff ahead of the Zephyr.

UP 7634 and three additional units lead a westbound oil train in the east end of Barbara's Gulch. The tower in the background is a bit of an icon among railfans in the Arvada area. It has been here for about 50 years, originally built as part of a coal mine.

The days are short in the winter months, but the quality of light is absolutely fantastic! Four units lead this westbound oil empty on the main between Leyden and Rocky.

An empty oil train just received a light at C&S Junction on Bypass to head west on the Moffat. The crew is starting the journey to Bond, where there will be a crew change to then take the train on the Grand Junction. Without changing tracks, the train is moving from Bypass 2 to Main 1, ready to cross over Federal Blvd.

It is a little difficult to tell from this view, but the engineer has flipped on the headlights on UP 7634. The brakes are being released and the engineer has notched the unit into Run 1 to start creeping west. The unit is on the point of an empty oil train, ready to head west and tackle the Moffat.

A westbound oil train is sitting on Bypass 2, presently facing a red signal at C&S Junction. Indeed, you can see the signal the crew is looking at on the signal bridge, right over the track. In just a minute, this signal will turn green and the train will depart west.

An SD40N and a GP40-2 sit paired together in North Yard. The units have been used on the South Local lately, which runs south on the Joint Line a couple of days a week. At the moment, they are idling, waiting for their next assignment.
