Yard Shots BNSF
As time marches onward, fewer and fewer "green and cream" units remain on BNSF's roster as repaints continue. However, you can still find them here and there. BNSF 9709 is one such example, sitting near the engine house in Denver.

BNSF keeps a HazMat cleanup train set stored at Denver. It includes this caboose and several tank cars, all painted in this eye-catching, bright-red paint scheme.

Even though it is Sunday morning, switching at BNSF's 31st Street Yard in Denver continues at both the north and south end, just as it does 24 hours a day, 7 days a week.

A look at BNSF's yard in Denver. Most of the tracks in the shot are a part of yard limits, and under the jurisdiction of the yardmaster. However, the three tracks on the right of the yard (not including RTDs Commuter Rail tracks) are all CTC and under the jurisdiction of the Brush Subdivision Dispatcher in Ft Worth, TX.

An overview of BNSF's engine facility in Denver on a sunny Tuesday morning. Even in 2023, it is still not uncommon to find patched BN or ATSF units that still bear their green and black or blue and yellow colors. Not the case today, however, as the scene is entirely dominated by the BNSF orange that has been the standard for decades.

On the east side of BNSF's Engine House in Denver, the California Zephyr is backing down the Passenger Lead toward Union Station to make an almost 16 hour late station stop. The tracks on the bridge next to the Zephyr below to RTD's N-Line commuter rail that runs northeast to Thornton.

An almost 16 hour late Zephyr backs down the Passenger Lead that will take it in to Union Station, allowing it to make its station stop in Denver. It is rare to get a shot of the eastbound Zephyr making this move in such great light. In fact, for about half the year, this move takes place in the dark, well after sunset. The landscape of Downtown Denver has certainly changed significantly in the past 10-15 years.

Sitting on the bridge over the South Platte River, the Zephyr sits next to two BNSF yard jobs. This is a bit of a bottleneck for the Zephyr (east and west) as these are "yard limits". No CTC and no dispatcher through here. It is somewhat analogous to a parking lot for cars. Take turns and watch for each other. It is slow going and switches have to be hand-thrown to align your particular train.

The two P42DCs leading the eastbound Zephyr sit on the bridge over the South Platte River in the middle of BNSF's yard, awaiting for a switch to be thrown ahead of it so it can pull forward, and then back down the Passenger Lead in the Denver Union Station.

This shot at Utah Jct is a little bit deceptive. It rather appears that there is a lot of power on the point of the Rocky Mountaineer. In reality, the Mountaineer is back a bit and three light units are coming in to North Yard off the Belt Lead.

UP 6385 was the lead unit on an eastbound oil train that came off the Moffat earlier this morning. The third unit from the head end was not needed for the journey east on the plains, so the outbound crew (new crew that got on in Denver for the journey east) had to cut the power off and back down the Belt in to North Yard to drop off the third unit. That lead unit, UP 6385, started life as SP 339.

Once upon a time, the Belt Line was used by Rock Island to bring trains from east on the plains to North Yard to interchange with Rio Grande. Today, the Belt and North Yard are, of course, owned by UP. The Rocky Mountaineer, is a rare move, is backing off the Belt Line and in to North Yard so it can depart west toward the Moffat on Main 3. Typically, the train would just cross Bypass 1 or 2 westbound, but both Bypass tracks were blocked, necessitating the rare move.

An interesting quartet of light power moves around near Utah Jct at the north end of North Yard. UP 1997 and UP 1980 are both SD40-2s, UP 4553 is an SD70M, and BNSF 7638 is ES44DC. The mix of newer and older power, along with a foreign unit (BNSF) is what makes this consist somewhat unusual.

UP 1989 sits shut down near the ready tracks in North Yard. It has been rumored that it has been placed in storage due to a downturn in business on UP. If that is true, it may well be sitting here for weeks or months to come.

Rumor has it that UP 1989 has been placed in long term storage due to a downturn in business. If that's the case, it is being stored in an unusual spot. It is currently near the ready tracks in North Yard, along with an SD70ACe-T4 and an AC4400CW.
