Yard Shots Union Pacific
UP 1983 is the UP heritage unit I have captured the least. I was happy I had the chance to get a few shots on this December afternoon as the unit sat in North Yard, waiting to head to North Platte, NE. Hard to believe that it has been nearly 20 years since the UP heritage fleet was unveiled.

One of UP's six heritage units, the Western Pacific unit (UP 1983) was hanging out in North Yard this afternoon. The unit cannot be run on a train as its 92-day FRA inspection is due. The unit will be transported (dead-in-consist) to North Platte so its 92-day inspection can be completed again.

In 2016, the Regional Transportation District (RTD) started construction on the "N-Line". A commuter rail line connecting Denver Union Station with the suburbs of Commerce City, Thornton, and Northglenn. In this shot, an N-Line commuter train slows on the overpass alongside BNSF's engine house.

A handful of units sit on the north side of BNSF's engine house. In the morning sun, it is very clear that BNSF's original "Heritage" scheme was indeed a dark green and orange, rather than the modern black and orange. BNSF 2371 started life as Forth Worth and Denver in June 1980. To date, it has not had a major rebuild, and is still standard GP38-2.

A few engine sets sit at the fuel racks at BNSF's engine facility. It looks like BNSF replaced the doors for the two tracks that enter the engine facility with transparent doors!

Sitting near BNSF's engine facility is an SD40-2 (or, former SD40-2) in the green and silver GATX Locomotive Group. I could not find information about the heritage of the unit, or if it was indeed still considered an SD40-2, or if it has been rebuilt to different specifications. The unit will be sent to Longmont the next day for switching duties.

After nearly an hour of nothing moving, I was about ready to call it a day and head home when I noticed a blade train coming off the Front Range Sub! The train was instructed to pull through Rennicks and continue south on the Joint Line. A new crew was waiting at Walnut Street. Here, the train is coming through Rennicks Yard.

UP's Green River, WY to North Yard manifest has completed its journey on the Greeley Sub and is pulling into Track 6 in North Yard off the Belt Line. The train is too long to entirely fit on Track 6, so it will split in half, the back half being shoved into Track 5. The conductor is currently riding on the front platform, keeping a close eye on switches to ensure they are properly aligned.

DRGW 1357 sits waiting for its next assignment, most likely as power on a local. In the distance, an SD40N and a GP38N also wait for their next assignment, but as remote control yard power for switching in North Yard. UP 1357 was originally DRGW 3102. Indeed, you can clearly see where its MARS light was once located, as well as the class lights on the nose.

A pair of GP40-2s sit near the yard office in North Yard, awaiting their next assignment. Neither of these geeps started life as Union Pacific units. The further unit, UP 1506 was SP 7128 when UP merged with Espee. However, the units history dates further back. It was originally delivered to the Baltimore and Ohio in September 1971 as B&O 4011! UP 1357, on the other hand, was delivered to Rio Grande in April 1972 as DRGW 3102.

A GP38-2 (now a GP38N) and an SD40-2 (now an SD40N) sit idly in North Yard. These units are the currently power used for switching cars in the yard. At the moment, no cars need to be switched! Without knowing anything about the numbering scheme for UP's roster or specific history of units, I can guarantee that this GP38-2 is either of Missouri Pacific or MKT heritage. How? Note that it lacks dynamic brakes. Missouri Pacific and MKT, both being plains railroads, ordered some units without any dynamic brakes. In this case, this was originally MP 2188, delivered to Missouri Pacific in February 1980, just shy of three years before UP would take over MP.

While the lighting is not fantastic for this shot, I could not resist getting a shot of this UP GP60. My favorite two four axle units are the GP30 and the GP60, so anytime I come across either, I have to try for a shot. This guy was built in September 1989 and was delivered to Espee as a Cotton Belt unit!

A string of units sits on the ready track in North Yard. The name "ready track" comes exactly where you might imagine. These units have been serviced and are ready for their next assignment, whatever that might be. It appears the crew that moved the units accidentally left the headlights on on UP 7849!

This shot is just an overview shot of BNSF's engine house and facilities. Unlike UP, which has moved all but the most minor of maintenance out of Denver, BNSF still does some more substantial maintenance on engines here in Denver. How cool it would be to see this exact same perspective 40 years ago...

Yard Shots BNSF, BN
I felt like this was a pretty fantastic find! A pair of BN (yes...patched BNSF...but still Cascade Green) switching together on a yard job at 31st Street. Note the second unit might, at first glance, appear to be a GP30. And, it did indeed start life as exactly that. However, BNSF no longer has any "true" GP30s left on the roster. They have all been rebuilt and this unit is now designated as a GP39-3. If you look close enough, you'll note the center (smaller) radiator fan has been removed.
