The Kansas, on the end of the train, is crossing on the bridge in this shot. Unfortunately, a few of the Aspens have grown tall enough to obscure a bit of the view here. At Cliff, the train meets the eastbound MRONY (in the siding). The tracks also parallel Colorado Highway 72 for much of the journey through the block. The Summer Ski Train has a much shorter day than the Winter Ski Train. It is passing by Leyden here around 5:00pm, compared to 6:00pm in the winter. Four of the 14 cars (plus the three private cars) made up the consist for the trip. A day before this picture, the train went up to Winter Park and spent the night tied down on the Fraser siding. At its peak, Amtrak held 215 F40PHs on the roster. Many of these units were designated F40PHRs, the "R" indicated they had been built - to some extent - using parts from traded in SDP40's. The train will be meeting an eastbound manifest (the MRONY-04) at Clay. The manifest is holding the main, but does not fit between switches. Those with a keen eye might note something different about the Ski Train on this evening...the private cars are at the front of the train! This would be because the train was unable to wye (turn around) at Tabernash. So, the power ran around the train and essentially ran down the mountain "backward". Sounds like a coal load that was having some problems prevented the Ski Train from being able to be wyed at Tabernash.
