About halfway through the siding at Cliff, the track cross South Boulder Creek on a wooden trestle. The Kansas, on the end of the train, is crossing on the bridge in this shot. Unfortunately, a few of the Aspens have grown tall enough to obscure a bit of the view here.

The Ski Train makes its third westbound run to Winter Park of the summer. At Cliff, the train meets the eastbound MRONY (in the siding). The tracks also parallel Colorado Highway 72 for much of the journey through the block. The train is about halfway through the block at this point.

On the first full day of summer, the eastbound Ski Train is on the move at Leyden, trying to make it back to Union Station on time. The Summer Ski Train has a much shorter day than the Winter Ski Train. It is passing by Leyden here around 5:00pm, compared to 6:00pm in the winter.

Seven miles into its (roughly) 57 mile journey to Winter Park, the first Summer Ski Train of 2008 has a clear signal at CP DS007 in Arvada. In addition to passing the signal, the train is about to cross over Pierce Street.

A few days prior to the start of the 2008 Summer Ski Train Season, the train (or a part of the train) was chartered for an overnight trip to Winter Park. Four of the 14 cars (plus the three private cars) made up the consist for the trip. A day before this picture, the train went up to Winter Park and spent the night tied down on the Fraser siding. Here, the train passes through Arvada on the way back to Union Station.

At the west end of Leyden, the Ski Train has pretty well reached track speed for the trip back into town. At its peak, Amtrak held 215 F40PHs on the roster. Many of these units were designated F40PHRs, the "R" indicated they had been built - to some extent - using parts from traded in SDP40's. Such was the case for all three of the Ski Train units (SKTX 242, SKTX 283 and SKTX 289).

The Ski Train is roughly half way home as it passes by the maintenance sheds and grade crossing at Plain. Note that, from this particular vantage point, you can clearly see Boulder in the distance, just above the number boards of SKTX 242.

It is a rather dark (and overcast) morning as the westbound Ski Train highballs the east end of Leyden. Note the crossing signals, still activated, at 80th Avenue directly above SKTX 242.

On a clear Colorado morning - well, clear to the east anyway - the Ski Train meets an eastbound coal load at Rocky. If you look closely, you can see the tail end of an eastbound MRONY holding the main at Clay!

Approach the east switch at Rocky, the westbound Ski Train has an Advanced Approach (high flashing yellow) signal. The train will be meeting an eastbound manifest (the MRONY-04) at Clay. The manifest is holding the main, but does not fit between switches. The Ski Train will run through the siding, waiting for the manifest to clear, and then continue west.

Light was very quickly fading from the sky as the Ski Train comes out the east end of Rocky. Those with a keen eye might note something different about the Ski Train on this evening...the private cars are at the front of the train! This would be because the train was unable to wye (turn around) at Tabernash. So, the power ran around the train and essentially ran down the mountain "backward".

Problems, problems, problems! Sounds like a coal load that was having some problems prevented the Ski Train from being able to be wyed at Tabernash. The power run around the train (note SKTX 283 in the lead instead of the typical SKTX 242). Passengers in the Kansas, Utah and California have a front seat view of the power!

The Ski Train had a great run up the mountain on this day. The first eastbound was in between Granby and Tabernash as the train made its way up the hill. At the base of Coal Creek Canyon, the train is running on clear signals on a beautiful Colorado morning.

My first shot of the Ski Train for the 2007-2008 Ski Season! It look a while for me to get track side, but I'm pleased with the result of this first picture. The train is running right on time as the train moves along at track speed between Kipling Street and 72nd Avenue.
