The South Platte River has receded considerably since May and June when it was nearly bursting at the banks! That was after near-record rainfall in the Spring. With things drying out the snow long since melted, the waters have decreased as a northbound coal empty crosses alongside US-85 just north of La Salle.

Visitors far from home lead a coal empty north on the UP Greeley Sub at Platteville, about 35 miles north of Denver. Canadian Pacific and Kansas City Southern merged earlier this year, creating CPKC (Canadian Pacific Kansas City), so it is not too surprising that the leased power has a unit from each road represented.

A pair of CPKC units (one CP, one KCS) are quite a ways from home as they lead a coal empty north on the Greeley Sub. The train is slowing for the grade crossing at MP 29.99 (County Road 22). A previous train reported that the main lights and gates were working, but the lights on one of the gates were broken off and hanging down. Consequently, an "XH" order was placed on the crossing. This requires all trains to slow to ensure no cars are going through the crossing when they shouldn't.

A local picks up a string of hoppers from an industry. Unfortunately, due to the location of the switch and the length of the train, the north switch at Brighton is blocked, preventing the coal empty on the siding from being able to continue north.

This coal empty was holding south of the siding of Brighton so as not to block grade crossing through town. When the southbound it was meeting showed up, the train pulled in to the siding. However, nobody informed the crew that the southbound is a local that is blocking the north end of the siding, preventing the coal empty from leaving! So the crossing in Brighton wound up blocked for over 30 minutes anyway.

A pair of SD70Ms serve as the power on a local that originated from La Salle earlier in the day. It is now stopped on the main at Brighton has the string of covered hoppers to the left need to be picked up by the local. The cars behind the power will be spotted in their place.

A southbound auto and intermodal mixed train crosses Sand Creek on UP's Greeley Sub. The train is crossing the BNSF Brush Sub right underneath (the extremely busy) I-270. The track above the UP power is BNSF's Brush Sub. Above that is a switching lead that BNSF can use to switch cars at the Suncor Oil Refinery.

The Suncor Oil Refinery in Commerce City was built around and in between the BNSF Brush Sub and the UP Greeley Sub. A pretty smart way to build it, actually, as it give the refinery access to two railroads for moving product. Of course, when the refinery was built, what is now the BNSF Brush Sub was actually the Chicago, Burlington, and Quincy (CB&Q) mainline to Denver from Chicago. Two mergers later (Burlington Northern, and then BNSF), and it is now the BNSF Brush Sub. The UP track, on the other hand, has been UP for all but 10 years of its life. It was originally built by the Denver Pacific Railway in 1870. Ten years later, in 1880, UP bought the Denver Pacific, gaining a direct line to Denver from Cheyenne.

In the shot here, a BNSF local sits on the Brush Sub (to the right) while a UP local sits on the Greeley Sub (to the left), both waiting their turn to cross the diamond where the two subdivisions intersect.

A northbound UP local sits patiently on the outbound track at Sand Creek, waiting for its turn to get a light across the diamond at which UP's Greeley Sub and BNSF's Brush Sub cross one another. However, the local will have to wait for four trains before it will get its turn to head north.

For the previous two months, The Rocky Mountaineer has only making a single trip per week from Denver out to Moab and back. However, with fall rapidly approaching, the train has once again started up twice-weekly service. The Mountaineer power is still in the shop, so a pair of (Phase 2) SD70Ms are being used for power.

Have an SD70M right up in your face! The best looking wide cab EMD ever produced, in my humble opinion. Teardrop windows on the point and a great looking nose. The train is currently backing away from the camera, switching cars in a side track at Gilcrest, CO.
