A week ago, I got a shot of BNSF 6705 sitting right here near the Vesta plant in Brighton. A week later, and sister unit BNSF 8102 has joined 6705! Not sure why these units are sitting here along the Greeley Sub. They must be power share units as BNSF has no trackage rights on the Greeley Sub.

A well-blocked northbound manifest leaves Denver behind between the sidings of Hazeltine and Brighton. The train has a quartet of units on the point, include an SD40-2.

A northbound manifest headed for North Platte sits in the siding at Hazeltine. UP 2632 and UP 8815 provide the power with UP 1370 catching a ride. The size of the newer units compared to the 50 year old GP40-2 is very apparent!

One of the 200 Tier-4 compliant ET44ACs that UP owns leads a northbound MDVNP in the siding at Hazeltine, just north of Denver. GE has, as of this photo, sold 1,117 Tier-4 units to six Class 1 railroads. By comparison, EMD has sold only 100 Tier-4 compliant SD70ACe-T4s, all to UP.

A GP40-2 is third out on a northbound manifest headed for North Platte, NE. With the closure of Burnham in Denver, no major repairs can be done in Denver. More than likely, the unit is headed to the shops there for maintenance. Incidentally, this particularly GP40-2 was originally DRGW 3119.

The Denver skyline and Rocky Mountains stand clear in the distance as a northbound manifest rolls on the siding at Hazeltine, meeting a southbound. Love how the view shows the Greeley Sub continuing straight toward the city.

A rather long local, consisting largely of covered hoppers, sits on the main at Hazeltine, just north of 112th Avenue. The train is following another southbound, sitting between switches ahead on the main. The local is hanging out of the north end of the siding. Fortunately, nothing else is coming south at the moment.

A pair of SD70Ms leads a local south on the main at Hazeltine, the last siding north of Denver on the Greeley Sub. The train is currently stopped as a second train, a manifest, is stopped ahead of the local. They are both waiting on a northbound manifest that will take the siding.

A single UP ES44AC heads north through the through the siding at Brighton. I honestly have no clue where this lone unit was coming from or where it was headed! Part of a local? Off to rescue a train? Not sure. But the scene looks nice at sunset creeps closer and closer.

BNSF does not have trackage rights on UP's Greeley Sub. This lone BNSF ES44C4 must be a lease unit, but it is interesting that it is sitting off the main on one of the lead tracks for Vestas, manufacturer of wind turbines.

A trio of SD70Ms leads a manifest that has been built in the new yard at La Salle on the Monfort Industrial Lead. UP built this new extension of the yard at La Salle (to the northeast of the existing yard) in 2019. This particular train is waiting for a crew to take it south.

In the roughly 25 years of taking train pictures, I have managed to shoot 150 (as of the date of this photo) of the over 1,400 SD70Ms that UP has on the roster. SD70Ms actually are not all that common in Colorado, with AC traction motor units being fall more common. Anyway, a Phase II SD70M, UP 3836, sits along in the north end of the yard in La Salle.

One of my personal favorite units of all time is EMD's SD70M. When first released, UP put in the largest single order (to that date) with 1,000 units. They followed that up over 400 additional orders. UP 4059 is one such unit, sitting at Eaton off the main track.

This is a paint scheme that I am definitely going to miss! Granted, Kansas City Southern units don't make it to Colorado particularly often, but when they do, they are great to see. With the merger of CP and KCS, creating CPKC, both the Canadian Pacific and KCS paint schemes will be replaced by a new scheme.
