A former Missouri Pacific GP38-2 sits in North Yard. The unit is likely used either for switching on yard jobs, or on locals. The unit was delivered to Missouri Pacific as MP 2237 in August 1980.

This former AC4400CW has been rebuilt as a C44ACM. Most of the Class 1 railroads are creating or expanding rebuild programs to bring new life to older units. This is largely due to the United States EPA Tier 4 emissions standards, which has increased both the up front cost and maintenance cost of brand new units.

Amongst some other units that have fueled and serviced and are awaiting their next assignment is UP 4548 and UP 4055. Two of the 1000 SD70Ms ordered by UP (in a single order) around 2000.

Yard Shots CSX
Interesting story behind this CSX ES40DC. It, along with 301 of its CSX siblings, were actually delivered as a 4400 HP ES44DC. Around 2010, CSX actually downgraded the prime movers to 4000 HP and redesignated the units as ES40DCs. UP is currently leasing this one as it sits on the ready track at North Yard.

A former UP SD45 (now designated as an SD40M-2) is now owned by the leasing company GATX. The old 20-cylinder prime mover has long since been removed and replaced with a 16-cylinder prime mover, like those in the SD40-2. Still, it is pretty cool catching what appears to be an SD45, based on the car body.

Yard Shots BNSF
While the Buck Lead is used daily by the morning California Zephyr to access Union Station, it is also used periodically throughout the day by BNSF when they need to wye power (turn it around). Four units are being brought out on the Buck Lead now for that exact reason. To be turned around and added to a train in the yard.

Now that MRL is owned by BNSF, and the MRL power has started to be distributed throughout the BNSF system, I have seen a couple MRL SD70ACes come through Denver. Another example was MRL 4317, which was in UP's North Yard on this Sunday morning. UP is working to add this unit, and the BNSF unit with it, on a transfer train that will return them to BNSF.

A pair of UP units back down the inbound lead at the south end of North Yard with a BNSF ES44AC and an MRL SD70ACe. This is part of a yard transfer that will move a block of cars from UP over to BNSF to facilitate customer needs. The BNSF and MRL units are being returned to BNSF after some power sharing on UP. The train on the outbound lead on the next track over is UP's daily MNYPU, which runs from North Yard to Pueblo, CO.

The power for the Rocky Mountaineer continues to sit on a stub track at UP's North Yard. With the 2025 season still about four months away, the power is likely waiting for some off-season maintenance. A pair of UP GEs sits near the fuel tracks in the foreground.

This GP38-2 was originally delivered to Missouri Pacific in February 1980 (as MP 2195). One pretty reliable tip that this unit was originally Missouri Pacific is the lack of dynamic brakes. Missouri Pacific and Katy (MKT), both plains railroads, had quite a few units without dynamic brakes. This saved money in the initial purchase and in maintenance costs.

This C44ACM is sporting UP's newest paint scheme, without a large flag on the long hood and without nose wings. The unit was recently rebuilt from the AC4400CW it was delivered to UP as in February 2001. The unit will be power on the MNYNP, manifest from North Yard to North Platte.

This snoot-nose SD40N is waiting to head to North Platte, NE, probably for its 92-day FRA inspection. This particular unit was originally delivered in March 1975. This unit has spent its entire life in yellow and gray paint, as it was indeed originally delivered to UP.
