I've probably made this comment before on another picture, but it still never ceases to amaze me just how many Warbonnets are still on the rails in 2024. And, in addition, just how many of them are still in pretty decent shape, considering it has been around thirty years since any of them were painted.

Buried in the fuel tracks at BNSF's 38th Street engine house, this MRL SD70ACe (4305) awaits its next assignment. BNSF took control of MRL at the start of 2024. Since then, the MRL power has been scattered across the BNSF system, being assigned to trains like any other BNSF unit. However, the MRL units are not (yet) equipped with PTC, so they, sadly, never on the point of a train.

Bird on a wire? The birds are all lined up to watch the rail action as a remote control UP yard job is switching cars out the south end of the yard, underneath the 48th Avenue overpass. The units are being controlled by a UP employee that is also throwing switches back in the yard. This remote control zone is called "Zone 1" here at North Yard.

An SD40-2 and a GP39-2 work to switch out strings of double stack containers in Rennicks Yard. The three tracks closed to the camera are owned by BNSF. All tracks beyond are owned by Union Pacific. Indeed, the classic North Yard yard office rests on the far sides of the tracks.

It has been said that the only thing that is consistent is change. Forty years ago, this shot of the engine tracks at North Yard would have been filled with black and gold Rio Grande power. Thirty years ago, it would have been largely filled with scarlet and gray Espee power. Now, as it has been for the last few decades, it is a sea of UP yellow. At some point in the future, it will no doubt change again. But to what?

An SD40-2 (now SD40N) seems to be having a pretty substantial mechanical issue, and is spewing large amounts of exhaust all over the engine tracks in North Yard. Perhaps it has a blown turbocharger? Whatever the issue, the unit will be shut off and ultimately sent to North Platte, NE.

A GP38-2 sits near the engine shop, which now has very limited abilities to do work on engines. The vast majority of maintenance requires engines be sent to the shops in North Platte, NE. Later in the day, this geep had been moved, so I am not sure if whatever issue(s) it may have had were resolved, or if it would be headed to Nebraska.

It appears that this SD40-2 (now designated as an SD40N) wishes it had been born as a steam engine a few generations earlier, based on the exhaust it is pumping out! Clearly, there is some sort of a mechanical issue with the unit, and a few minutes later, the unit was shut down.

An SD60M and an SD75I, in matching New Image schemes, sit near the engine house in Denver. BNSF 1448 was sported Cascade Green with a white BN herald on the nose. BNSF 290 originally wore the Warbonnet scheme. Very interesting finding these two units together. They are pretty rare in 2024 as most of either model have been in long term storage.

An interesting pairing between an SD75I and an SD60M sit near the BNSF engine house in Denver. It has been a full decade since I last shot a BNSF SD75I and nine years since I shot a BNSF SD60M! Indeed, I suspect it is the first time I've ever seen these models paired up together.

I love that nearly 30 years after the merger between Burlington Northern and Santa Fe, you can still find units holding on to their Cascade Green schemes! True, the paint is a bit shoddy, but it is still BN green. An SD40-2 and a former GP30, rebuilt into a GP38-3, hang out near the engine house.

A handful of BNSF units sit near the engine facility in Denver. There are actually typically more units sitting here, but things are a bit light on this Sunday morning.

One final shot of the Big Boy with its train as they back down and into the yard at Cheyenne. After two months on the road, UP 4014 is back at home base to rest before the next trip, whenever that may be. Over the course of two months, the train visited ten states including Arkansas, Colorado, Illinois, Iowa, Kansas, Missouri, Nebraska, Oklahoma, Texas, and Wyoming.

UP 4014 and train are now clear of all main tracks as they back down "the old way" toward the Cheyenne Yard. In the yard, the freight cars will be dropped off before the passenger cars placed on their storage track and the Big Boy is taken to the roundhouse.

In order to face north for the trip to Cheyenne, UP 4014 and train are backout out of North Yard, across the diamond at Utah Junction, and on to the Belt Line. The train will back all the way across the Belt Line to UP Junction, then down to 36th Street in order to depart north on the Greeley Sub.
