The westbound Zephyr is crossing the South Platte River, moving through BNSF's Denver Yard on its way to its station stop at Union Station. Some BNSF light power is coming out of the yard, headed for "the house" to be serviced. RTD's N-Line Commuter rail tracks are elevated on the bridge to the right.

UP's North Yard is fairly empty on this Sunday morning, with only a handful of units hanging around, most of those being units for yard jobs, transfers, or locals. Granted there are only four destinations for road freights that North Yard has to contend with these days: Pueblo to the south, North Platte, NE to the east, and Grand Junction to the west, and Green River, WY to the west.

BNSF's Denver yard is by far the largest yard in Denver, larger than both UP's North Yard and UP's 36th Street Yard. It has over 35 yard tracks in several places as well as a full car repair facility. The south side of the yard (far left in this frame) has three tracks under CTC control. The main line, plus "Coal 1" and "Coal 2", where coal trains frequently tie down.

At the northeast end of BNSF's 31st Street Yard, BNSF 1660 and BNSF 1590 work to break down a train, switching cars from the train on to different tracks, organizing them toward either their next destination (if not in Denver), or their final destination (if a local will deliver them in Denver).

Neither of these units originally left the paint factory in UP Armour Yellow. In fact, UP 1357 started as DRGW 3102 when it was delivered in April 1972. UPY 691 started out in deep blue as MP 1691 in February 1982. UPY 691 has certainly seen better days!

A UP GP40-2 #1357 sits near the yard office at UP's 36th Street Yard. This particular GP40-2 is no stranger to Denver as it started life at DRGW 3102. On June 3, 1997, it absorbed in to UP's roster as UP 5256. About six years later, on September 30, 2003, it found its new home on the roster as UP 1357. Nearly twenty years later, that's the number it still owns.

A look toward downtown over UP's 36th Street Yard. The area is transforming from one that is largely industrial (whether active or abandoned) to one of mixed commercial and residential. As you can see in this shot, four climbing cranes are visible, working to build new buildings ever higher.

Eleven units sit, stored in a "dead line" at UP's 36th Street Yard. As the US seemingly heads toward a recession, the number of units stored on all railroads is very likely to increase in the coming months.

Several dozen units sit at "The House", BNSF's engine shop in Denver, awaiting their next assignment. This is an area that has changed significantly in the past few years. Among other things, RTD's N-Line from Denver Union Station to Thornton, CO has been completed, as seen on the right side of the frame.

Being a diesel brat, I was particularly sad to see that UP is getting rid of UP 6936, a DDA40X and largest diesel locomotive ever produced. It has been inoperable since 2017, and it appears UP no longer wishes to deal with its mechanical issues. Fortunately, the Railroading Heritage of Midwest America museum has said they intend to repair it and bring it back to operational condition.
