I am not entirely sure why there were a pair of sightseer lounge cars bringing up the end of the westbound Zephyr on this morning. Perhaps they are being taken to California for the Coast Starlight, but it seems the Southwest Chief or Empire Builder would be more likely candidates for that task. Note the final lounge car, which is sporting the new Phase 7 paint scheme.

Four P42DCs lead the westbound Zephyr under overcast skies and chilly temperatures near Pactolus, west of Cliff. Temperatures today in the Colorado high country were only in the 40s. Certainly colder that the seasonal norm. Despite the relative lack of precipitation this past winter, the foliage has greened up quite nice.

The westbound Zephyr, running almost three hours late, approaches the east portal of Tunnel 1 in this shot taken for a very familiar vantage point. However, what makes it a little unique this morning is the fact the train has four P42DCs on the head end, instead of the typical two.

The westbound Zephyr had a quartet of P42DCs on the point this morning. I'm not entirely sure why the extra power was on the train. It was suggested that two units might be headed to Siemens in California to carry out a new Airo train set. It is also possible the extra power was due to the additional Superliners on the Zephyr today. Yet another possibility is just a power relocation move.

In addition to the scenery, wildlife is certainly one of the draws for passengers that choose to ride the California Zephyr. This morning, a small herd of elk hustle away from the tracks, trying to distance themselves from the noisy steel beast rolling by them. A quartet of P42DCs lead the unusually long (11-car) train this morning.

As the westbound Zephyr starts to accelerate on the main track after clearing a 10 MPH slow order, a herd of elk hear the approaching train and are started to move further up the mountain side. The elk on the far left even looks like it might be calling out a warning.

An almost three hour late Zephyr knocks down a green signal at East Irondale, the Denver skyline visible in the distance. I'm not sure why two extra sightseer lounge cars were on the train this morning, but it made for a bit of a unique shot.

A rather unusual consist on the Zephyr this morning as a quartet of P42DCs lead the train. The train also has an extra sleeper, and two additional sightseer lounge cars on the tail end. The train is approaching the east switch of Irondale, running just under three hours late.

A 14-hour late eastbound Zephyr crosses the diamond at Sand Creek. The train is passing underneath I-270 after just by the Suncor Oil Refinery. Not too often that the Zephyr is headed east through here at this time of the day.

When Amtrak received 20 B32‑8WH units from GE in 1991, at a time when the Phase 3 scheme was still the main scheme being used by Amtrak, the units received a unique variant of the Phase 3 scheme, often referred to as the "Pepsi Can" scheme. AMTK 160 has that unique scheme applied to it.

Backing up on the Buck Lead, the westbound Zephyr is about two hours late as it heads for its station stop. Downtown Denver and Coors Field (home of the Colorado Rockies) are both visible behind the Park Avenue viaduct in the distance.

After arriving in Denver nearly 23 hours late, this Zephyr was supposed to arrive the previous day. And, due to severe weather and other factors, it is departing Denver and returning to Chicago. A rare morning departure from Denver to head east. The train is on the Passenger Lead, passing by BNSF's engine house.
