The shadows on the Book Cliffs from the late afternoon sun help to clearly define all the ridges as the westbound California Zephyr passes underneath US-6 with a special addition in tow. Previously owned by Rio Grande and later by the Ski Train, the car will now go to the American Railway Explorer in Los Angeles.

For years, this car was known as the Wilson McCarthy when it was a business car for Rio Grande. It was renamed the Kansas and served many years on the Ski Train as one of the private cars (along with the Utah and California). Now, it has been rebranded for the "American Railway Explorer". This is a new service that will be based out of Los Angeles for trips up and down the coast. This may well be the last time the car is on former DRGW trackage! One last nail in the Ski Train coffin.

Here we go...unless something very unexpected happens in the future, this is the very final shot of the Ski Train I will ever take. Certainly likely to be the last shot of the train in Colorado anyway. Light is rapidly fading as the Ski Train zips by as seen from the US-85 overpass just north of Nunn. Farewell, old friend.

Just north of Ault, the sun has now set as the Ski Train continues north. I decided to get a shot from the east side of the train. You can clearly make out the outline of the F40PH's, as well as see the windows along the La Plata Peak.

In some ways, this shot is just about my favorite one of the entire day, chasing the Ski Train north on the Greeley Sub. So very representative of the train zooming away to new adventures in Canada.

Here it is! The very final shot that I'll (most likely) ever take of the entire Ski Train in the sunlight. Ironically, the train is just about as far away from Denver in this shot as it would be at Winter Park.

At the north end of Greeley, I got the "so long Ski Train, going away just before sunset" shot that I had been hoping for all day! Not much else to be said...

When I was a kid, my parents took me to Glenwood Springs all the time to swim as well as watch trains. That's probably why the Ski Train Glenwood Springs, seen here, is one of my favorites!

After an evening of clouds, the sun finally broke through the clouds about 20 minutes before sunset, offering this great shot with eerie storm clouds in the direct sunlight. The train is at the north end of Greeley, continuing north on a clear signal.

Not far north of La Salle and the Ski Train crosses over the South Platte River. Once again I conveniently cropped out the UP pilot leader!

In La Salle, we find all things that were once Rio Grande. Okay, technically the Tempo Ski Train cars weren't apart of Rio Grande, but we'll let that technicality slide!

Seeing as how the Ski Train is being transported to Canada to become a part of Algoma Central Railway, this shot underneath the quickly-flying American Flag seemed somewhat appropriate!

Just north of Ft Lupton, I stopped along US-85 and conveniently cropped out the UP pilot engine and got a shot of the Ski Train with some fairly dramatic cloud action!

My last shot of headlights from another train reflecting off the side of the Ski Train. At Brighton, the train held in the siding to wait for the ZLADV, quickly zooming down the main.
