A look at the engineer's side...such as it is, considering there is no cab...of this SD45-2B. It was pretty fantastic seeing a unit wearing Santa Fe blue and yellow in 2025. Particularly a unit as unique as this one! These B-units were not built by EMD, but were modifications made by Santa Fe. Santa Fe removed the cabs and created the B-units. A total of eight such B-units were created from SD45-2s.

One thing worth noting is that some people confuse a B-unit with a slug. A slug has no prime mover, but still has traction motors with power for the motors supplied by other units in its consist. A B-unit still has its prime mover, but simply has no cab and therefore cannot be controlled unless in an MU-consist with other units.

This is quite an incredible catch that I lucked into the day before Thanksgiving. This was the very last F40PH (actually, an F40PHR) delivered to Amtrak by EMD. The units were numbered 200 to 409, and were the backbone of the long distance trains on Amtrak through the 1980s and most of the 1990s. As you can see, AMTK 409 is sporting Amtrak's Phase 4 paint scheme. After being retired by Amtrak in 2001, the unit spent years in storage in Bear, DE before being sold to BUGX in private ownership and moved to Anaheim, CA. Here, it is on its way to Middletown, IA, possibly for cosmetic restoration.

A little GP60 action hanging around in Denver. This particular unit was originally delivered to Santa Fe in the Warbonnet scheme. In the early 1990s, Santa Fe often ran high priority intermodal trains with an A-B-B-A GP60 set.

In the 1970s and 1980s, several railroads had a bit of a fad with B-units. Meaning units without a cab. The units still had a prime mover and traction motors, but could only be controlled when MU'd to other units. Such units are quite rare today, but it just so happened that an SD45-2B was coming through town at BNSF's Engine House today. SPTX 5703 has a bit of a storied history. It was actually originally delivered as a standard SD45-2 (with a cab). In fact, this was the unit that Santa Fe painted in red, white, and blue to celebrate the Bicentennial in 1976. However, in October 1987, Santa Fe converted three SD45-2s into B-units, removing their cabs. ATSF 5703 was one such unit. Note that the dynamic brakes were moved forward to the area where the cab had once been located to help improve cooling. The unit is now owned by a private individual named Noah McCann, and it is reportedly headed to Middletown, IA.

This coal empty is crosses over I-70 as it heads north toward the connection to the Belt Industrial Lead where it will turn west. This is a scene that is radically different from what you wouldn't seen a decade earlier. At that time, I-70 passes over UP's tracks here on a stretch of bridge called the elevated deck. A massive project created a trench and I-70 is now below (normal) ground level. The tracks, of course, are at the same elevate they have always been at.

A pair of Canadian National units lead a West Elk bound coal empty at the north end of 36th Street. You can see a couple long lines of UP power in the distance, currently sitting in long term storage.

Power for the Limon Local passed by the Mid America passenger car (MRLX 1659), which is currently on Track 22 in North Yard. The local is on Track 24, the track that is used on the west side of the yard to move north or south through the yard.

The crew of the Limon Local goes on duty at 12:00 (noon) on Sunday afternoons. After arriving at North Yard and getting some things ready to go, the crew is on UP 6168, which will be the leader for the eastbound local. The train is waiting for the local at Stapleton, doubled over on two tracks. Today, an LTEX GP38-2 joins the train to be delivered at a rail park out near Bennett, CO.

Union Pacific has (or has had) a lot of C44-9Ws in long term storage around the system. UP definitely prefers AC powered units to DC powered units, so they have contracted with Wabtec to rebuild a lot of the older DC units into AC units. UP 9823 is a great example! It was originally CNW 8719, delivered in May 1994. It has now been rebuilt into a C44ACM.

Mid-train swing power from a (rare) eastbound coal load heads south on Track 24 in North Yard, on the way to "the pit" to be serviced for their next assignment. Of note, UP 6219 was originally SP 172, delivered in May 1995.

A close up shot of MRLX 1659 sitting in North Yard. The car was originally built in 1950 by Pullman-Standard for the Chesapeake & Ohio Railway. The C&O ordered 284 streamlined cars from Pullman-Standard in 1946 (later reduced to 185 cars), and this was part of that order. After the C&O, the car spent time on the rosters of the Seaboard Coast Line, Chicago & North Western, Southern Pacific, and Nacionales de Mexico, before landing on the roster of Mid America Rail Car Leasing. It is rumored that it is now headed for a museum in Illinois.

Earlier in the day, I got a shot of this Mid America Rail Car Leasing (MRLX) passenger car in North Yard. Later in the day, the sun had moved to the west side, so I decided to go back for some better shots. The car is sitting on Track 22, waiting to be taken to North Platte, NE, and eventually, a railroad museum in Illinois.

A good overview of what little remains of UP's (and, before that, Rio Grande's) Burnham Shops in Denver. This was taken near the south end of the yard, looking north toward the 8th Avenue Viaduct and the main engine maintenance facility. On Valentine's Day, 2016, Burnham was closed. Some shop personnel were offer transfers to North Platte, NE. Others were offered "golden parachutes" to retire. Still, others were just let go.

5-10 years from the date of this shot, this same perspective will likely show a brand new stadium for the Denver Broncos. It is said the stadium will include a retractable roof with the hopes of attracting the Super Bowl. The Broncos current stadium, Empower Field, which opened in 2001, is visible in this shot in the distance. Look for the orange and blue in the top-left quadrant of the shot.

In this shot, you can clearly see the pit for the turntable that was actually in use at Burnham up until it was closed in 2016.
