However, when it started pulling out of the siding at Rocky, the drawbar on the front of the lead ballast car broke, and the train went into emergency. It appears they are going to re-ballast much of the line (if not the entire thing). They are also going to re-tie the Moffat Tunnel itself. Here, a ballast train was preparing to head west and drop ballast. Unfortunately, the train broke the drawbar on the lead ballast car, so it is not going anywhere anytime soon! After the Mountaineer passed, the ballast train started pulling west and broke the drawbar on the west end of the lead ballast car! The train has a buffer car on either end of the train, and 95 tank cars loaded with waxy crude oil. The train is just about to enter the final tunnel on the Moffat, Tunnel 1. The slow order is about a mile long, and there is a second two mile long slow order around Big Ten Curve. The car was originally built in 1955 as the Union Pacific dome-lounge-observation car #9003. After going through several owners, the car was purchased in 1992 and was fully restored, turning it into the Northern Sky, which is available for charter today. The local spotted two gondolas with tie plates and some MOW equipment in the house track at Rocky, and is now returning to North Yard. The lead unit is UP 1357. This particular GP40-2 is very familiar with the Moffat. It started life as DRGW 3102, delivered to the Grande in April 1972. It lost a little more time across the plains, and is now just over two hours late as it heads west on the main track at Leyden. The red flag is protecting a manual derail that has been installed on the north rail beyond the red flag. The derail is protecting a string of 40 or so gondolas stored in the siding of Leyden. The train just departed Rocky and is passing underneath CO-93. In the distance, you can clearly see the wind break on Big Ten Curve.
