In the midst of golden hour, about 30 minutes before the sun dips behind the Rocky Mountains, the Winter Park Express cruises along at track speed in the Denver suburb of Arvada.

At the start of Golden Hour, you couldn't ask for better light as a westbound BNSF oil empty charges west out of Leyden. BNSF pretty consistently runs their eastbound oil loads in a 3x(0)x3 configuration. Consequently, it makes sense that this westbound empty has six units on the head end. Three of the unit move to the east end of the train for journey back east.

A week earlier, I mentioned that a 50-foot section of the Rocky Spur had been removed just east of the CO-93 grade crossing. It seems that whatever utility work was being done beneath the tracks has been completed. The tracks have been reconnected and ballast has been laid.

The eastbound Zephyr is about to knock down a clear (green) signal at the east end of Rocky, hustling to make it in to Denver on time. In fact, it will end up arriving in Denver 11 minutes early. To the left, not the back end of a UP oil empty, which is starting to pull west out of Rocky. The oil train will go up to Plain to meet the Winter Park Express.

One of my favorite times of year is the start of Daylight Savings Time. Once that starts up, it is easy to get shots of the eastbound Zephyr in daylight, providing it is not excessively late. Fortunately, it is on time this evening as it meets with a westbound UP oil train at Rocky.

The eastbound California Zephyr is out of its 10 MPH speed restriction around Big Ten, and is accelerating to track speed as it meets a westbound UP oil train at Rocky. The conductor from the UP train is out of view behind the lead unit, giving a roll by to the Zephyr.

We are almost to the spring equinox, but the sun still hasn't moved quite far enough north for direct sunlight on the side of the eastbound Zephyr as it rounds the northeast edge of Big Ten Curve. The train is restricted to 10 MPH right here due to forecasted high winds.

I rather enjoyed this view, looking down on coal hoppers next to low side gondolas at Leyden. Note the rust that is clearly building up in the gondolas after sitting in the elements with no loads to help protect them.

UP 6023 and UP 8312 pass the string of low side gondolas that have now been stored in the siding here at Leyden for a little over five months. It would have been great for the dispatcher to have Leyden available today as it would have been the perfect spot for a meet with an eastbound BNSF oil train.

A pair of units lead a westbound coal empty at a clear (green) signal at the east end of Leyden. Prior to this train, the last UP coal train I shot on the Moffat was in December 2024. That's not to suggest that was the last one that ran. Only that they are rare enough that I go quite a bit of time in between seeing them these days.

UP 6023 is rolling west at a restricted speed of about 15 MPH. There is a spurious track occupancy between the intermediate signal at MP 9.7 (at Kipling Street) and the east end of Leyden. Consequently, the signal at MP 9.7 was red. Since it is an intermediate and not an absolute signal, the crew does not need authority for the dispatcher to pass, but they do have to continue at restricting speed, prepared to stop short of any obstructions on the track. The train is crossing Church Ditch, approach a clear (green) signal at East Leyden.
