It has been seven years since I worked in Boulder, so it is good to swing through town once in awhile and get a shot of train. The flat irons looks good in the background as this coal empty approaches 55th Street along the Diagonal Highway on the north side of Boulder.

It appears as though BNSF probably used some heavy rubber-tired equipment when making repairs to the track here. There is plenty of evidence of large machinery making its way around in the area.

There was some minor damage to the tracks not too far north of Jay Road along the diagonal highway. Fortunately, BNSF was able to implement repairs quickly to this one.

This pedestrian and bicycle underpass was constructed in 1987. The warning on the sign couldn't be more accurate! It read: "CAUTION - Area subject to flash flooding. Do not take shelter here."

This tunnel under the tracks flooded along with everything else around Boulder creek when the water levels rose by six feet in just over 24 hours. Although still in this picture, at its peek, Boulder Creek was flowing with a current of over 5000 cubic feet per second. By comparison, the norm is around 20 cubic feet per second.

In the distance, beyond this washout, you can see some fresh ballast that BNSF has laid. You can also see the headlights of some MOW equipment as well. BNSF is working hard there to get the line open for the Valmont coal train so the Valmont Power Plant can continue to generate electricity.

You can see just how close the washed out portion of the Front Range Sub came to the south switch of the Boulder siding.

It is rather interesting looking down between the rails and, in the spots where the compacted ballast fell through, see rushing water!

Water from Boulder creek quickly rushes underneath the new "underpass" along the BNSF Front Range Sub

While the tie did not survive, I was rather amazed to find this tie plate dangling from the heads of the two spikes. Not sure how they managed to hang on!

A few hundred feet down the tracks, you can see the bridge under which Boulder creek is supposed to flow. Granted, with the water being as high as it is, water still is flowing underneath it. The challenge for engineers will be getting the creek to "want" to take its previous path, which include turns here at the tracks and running parallel over to the bridge.

This view of the rapids of the relocation of Boulder creek clearly shows how the river just made a new path for itself. Would imagine the water is probably at least 10 feet deep still right here.

While there is nothing but water beneath this ballast, the ballast is packed in so tight between the ties that it is hanging around!

Another view of the 60-foot wash out on the BNSF Front Range Sub right near the south siding switch of Boulder. Not sure how BNSF will get this repaired until the water level significantly decreases!

Thanks in no small part to the advent of CWR (Continuous Welded Rail), washouts like this often result in the rails left dangling over the now-missing ground. Boulder creek, rerouted by Mother Nature after major flooding, is still near the rails as the rapids rush downstream.

Prior to the massive flooding a week earlier, this shot would have just been tracks on a fill. Boulder creek used to run parallel to the tracks (on the right side) in this shot. The massive amounts of water, however, led to the destruction of the fill and this new path for the creek.
