About ten years ago, BNSF moved both the north and south switches of Broomfield. Both are now further north than they previously were, eliminating two grade crossing between switches, including the very busy Nickel Street grade crossing. Now, the siding is basically the same length, but there are no grade crossing blocked when a train is stopped here. This northbound has just received a new warrant, and is pulling across the Brainard grade crossing, which was also relocated at the same time to ensure no grade crossing where between switches on the siding.

For decades, pedestrians and cyclists wanting to cross the tracks here at Broomfield, they would do so via a dirt path that had been created just from the traffic of people walking across the tracks and up or down the hill on the other side. In an effort to make this safer and more convenient, the City of Broomfield built this pedestrian overpass in 2020.

At the siding of Broomfield, the Denver-Laurel takes the siding, meeting its counterpart, the Laurel-Denver, which was holding the main. The Front Range Sub is still operated using track warrants, meaning crew have to manually throw all switches at sidings. To save time, crews are not required to realign switches for the main line. So, when a meet happen, the train will take the siding or hold the main depending on how the switch is aligned, regardless of how close or far away the train being met is to the siding.

Just north of Broomfield, a special Amtrak trip to Longmont moves away from the camera. To simplify the move, a P42DC was put on either end of the train. AMTK 169 was the unit on the south end and would lead for the trip back to Denver later in the afternoon.

You could not ask for a more bland, flat, gray day for a special move on the Front Range Sub! The very striking Phase VII scheme of AMTK 174 is the only real color in the scene just north of the siding of Broomfield.

This Warbonnet has seen better days! When the paint on a Warbonnet has gotten this bad, the unit is sometimes then referred to as a "Pinkbonnet" due to the faded paint. Still, it's 2018 and it's been 20+ years since there was a freshly painted Warbonnet, so I'll take what I can get.

A pair of C44-9Ws lead a northbound manifest out of the siding at Broomfield on a snowy February morning. In addition to the power here on the point, one more C44-9W is DPU'd on the rear as well.

With the north switch of Broomfield aligned for the siding, this northbound manifest is able to start pulling again. They have a track warrant that goes from the north switch of Broomfield to the north switch of Longs Peak.

The conductor of this northbound manifest works to throw the switch from the main to the siding so this manifest can continue north. The dispatcher gave them a "Box 13" that will allow them to leave the switch reversed.

A northbound manifest stops at the north end of Broomfield in order to throw the switch. However, before that can happen, the conductor must use a broom to sweep the snow out of the switch points so the switch can be successfully thrown.

A northbound manifest rolls through the siding at Broomfield amidst a February blizzard. In the distance, you might be able to just see the tail end of the southbound that they met on the main. The northbound already has a warrant to continue north, but they will first have to throw the switch at the north end of the siding.

At the north siding switch of Broomfield, a BNSF crew has UP's ZDVSC (Denver, CO to Salt Lake City, UT) daily intermodal train moving quickly north. Typically, this train departs Denver between 4am and 5am and typically, of course, it runs on UP's Greeley Sub. But a derailment the previous night still had the line closed and UP needed to run the Z-Train. Many railfans were hoping that UP might decide to single-stack the containers and run the train via the Moffat (as the Moffat cannot support double stacks). Or at least run the TOFC cars via the Moffat. Instead, this equally rare shot was produced. BNSF allowed UP to run the Z-Trains on the Front Range Sub between Denver and Cheyenne. This northbound Z-Train would meet the southbound ZLADV at Longs Peak! I was able to get this shot with the last few remnants of light as the sun had already set behind the Rockies.

A southbound unit covered hopper train (likely a sand train) pulls out of the siding at Broomfield and onto the main at the (relatively) new south switch. Traffic can be seen crossing over the tracks on US-287 in the background.
