The last hint of light is about to disappear in the western sky as Amtrak 6 comes creeping by on the Brush Sub after departing Denver. Unfortunately, a freight train that departed on the Brush Sub ahead of Amtrak got stuck at a red signal, delaying Amtrak about 10 minutes. had the delay not occurred, the sunset would have been a bit more spectacular!

A bit of light pokes through the clouds in the western sky at 7:35pm to light up the sides of a few of Denver's buildings as the eastbound Zephyr backs into Union Station on the passenger lead. It is 7:35pm...Amtrak would come to a stop at 7:43pm - precisely on time!

With the light fading fairly fast in the western sky, black and white seemed appropriate for this shot. The eastbound Zephyr must borrow a part of BNSF's yard in order to back into Union Station on the Passenger Lead. Note the conductor from the head end walking to throw a switch.

Running on time almost to the minute, Amtrak 6 passes the signal bridge at Pecos Street running on a clear signal on Main 3. Although most of the sky is overcast, there is enough of a gap to the west to allow for some nice silhouette lighting to sneak through.

Light is shining down on Big Ten Curve as a C44-9W and two C40-8Ws pull on BNSF's MDVPVJ-24. The hoppers that serve as a wind break are just visible to the left of the lead unit.

In this day and age (being the time this picture was taken), unpatched Espee units are becoming harder and harder to find. Of the 279 AC4400CWs that Espee had, only 15 were left unpatched as of this photo!

Approaching the east end of the Belt Industrial Lead, this North Yard to North Platte manifest is about to turn north toward the Greeley Subdivision. While the train has eight units (including an unpatched EspeeAC, two new Ferromex ES44ACs and two SD40-2s), only three of the eight are on active and loading.

The two Ferromex ES44ACs came into town on the Joint Line on a UP coal empty. The coal train turned west toward the Moffat, but unfortunately left the FXE units behind! Instead, they are assigned to the MNYNP-24 to head to North Platte, NE

I thought this was an interesting trio of units sitting near BNSF's House. A Norfolk Southern "Catfish" (a name given to NS C44-9Ws by railfans) is sandwiched by two Warbonnets. Unfortunately, the second Warbonnet was blocked by additional power and I couldn't include any more of the unit.

A good looking Warbonnet SD75M idles in the distance while the UP Transfer heads from BNSF's 31st Street Yard back to UP's 36th Street Yard. At least once per day, UP comes to 31st Street from 36th Street to drop off and pick up interchange cars. Likewise, BNSF heads to North Yard from 31st Street to do the same.

This is something of a back-lit shot, but I decided to post it anyway. The reason being that this unit was in the consist of the MDVSI-04, getting ready to head east out of town. I have a strong suspicion that this unit might be headed for North Little Rock for a fresh coat of Armour Yellow paint!

In the 1980s, Santa Fe ran a high priority intermodal from Big Lift (south of Denver on the Joint Line) to La Juanta. The train was symboled QDVLJ and QLJDV. It was very common for this train to run with GP30s, GP35s and GP39-2s. Some twenty years later, it was a nice surprise to find a GP30 and a GP35 - both wearing the Yellow Bonnet - heading to town from the Golden Spur.

This train might be running on BNSF's Golden Subdivision, which primarily serves to transport cars into and out of the Coors Brewing company, but this is not the so-called "Beer Run". It is actually the Golden Switch job. There are several industries that run along the line that have nothing to do with Coors that need to be switched. Here, the switch job is bringing a few cars into town.

This 52-car MNPDV-02 (if my counting is accurate!) left North Platte, NE a day earlier and is seen here coming down the inbound track to UP's 36th Street Yard off the Greeley Sub. A day later, this same power would be used on the MDVNP and return north.

A very interesting trio of power sits on the ready track in Denver. BNSF 9150 is one of newest units (an SD70ACe) on BNSF's roster. The unit was delivered this year and has EMDs "Whisper Cab". BNSF 520 is a badly faded B40-8W. Lastly, BNSF 8175 is one of the only SD60M to actually receive a repaint (into the H2 scheme, in this case).
