When UP added a second main between C&S Jct and Arvada, they basically added another siding, when needed, west of Denver. One such overpass crosses UP's 36th Street Yard in Denver. This offers a new perspective on the yard that was not previously possible! Here, we can see units used on locals and for switching in the yard (to the right), and some units on the "ready track" to the left. That will allow for quick loading in Denver and unloading on the new platform in Winter Park. And vice versa in the afternoons! While Union Station (the building) hasn't changed, the surrounding buildings and the tracks behind it in "train hall" have changed immensely in the last ten years! With six tracks (1-3 and 6-8) devoted to commuter rail, two tracks (4 and 5) are reserved for non-commuter trains such as Amtrak and, as you see here, the new Ski Train. Amtrak will run the train from Denver to Winter Park and back on Saturdays and Sundays from January 7, 2017 through March 26, 2017. The train departs Denver at 7am. Winter tends to be Amtrak's slow season, so they could afford to steal a few Superliners from long distance trains to make up the 7-car consist of the Winter Park Express. At the time of this shot, the Winter Park Express (Ski Train) was two days away from its inaugural run. Amtrak set aside a mighty fine looking unit for the train this winter.
