Okay, who notices something a little strange about this particular picture. Something odd about the power on this loaded coal train. The four units on the point? Well, that is a little unusual? More unusual is the fact that there is an SD70M in the consist. That SD70M has DC traction motors...something that you almost never find on coal trains in the 21st century! The SD70M was added in Grand Junction, although for what reason, I'm not sure.

Get ready, because shots like these won't be possible for much longer! After five years, funding has finally been identified and a company named to carry out the Pecos Street grade separation. A new bridge will be built (18-22 months) over the UP Moffat Tunnel Sub and the BNSF Front Range Sub. The street was officially closed to through traffic starting on December 16, 2009.

A loaded coal train makes its way down Bypass 1. This train is a little unusual in that there are four units on the point. Most coal loads on the Moffat these days have two or perhaps three units on the point.

The lighting was not too kind, but I figured it was worth grabbing a shot from both sides of the SLRG SD9043MACs. After all, they were just sitting there on Track 3 asking to have their picture taken!

Get ready! If you are along the Moffat Tunnel Route, you'll be seeing this facing heading toward you at grade crossing a lot in the next three months. The Rio Grande Scenic Railroad will run from the end of December to the end of March. Hopefully, they'll turn a profit and the train will be around for many more seasons to come.

A pair of San Luis and Rio Grande SD9043MACs sit on the northeast end of Track 3 and Union Station. These units were formerly CEFX leaser units until the SLRG purchased them.

These SD9043MACs are wearing the paint scheme of the San Luis and Rio Grande. This is a short line that operates over La Veta Pass between Walsenburg, Alamosa and Antonito. The short line was hoping to revive the Ski Train in a trial run for one season in 2010 to see they can turn a profit. The train was to be run as the Rio Grande Scenic Ski Train and this was to be the power. However, negotiations with Amtrak fell through at the last moment and the train didn't come together. Rumor is they will try again in 2011.

Starting December 27th, 2009, the reincarnated Ski Train was supposed to begin operations from Denver to Winter Park. These SD9043MACs were to provide the power for the train (seen here parked on Track 3 at Union Station). Negotiations fell through, however, and the train did not run.

After completing its station stop, the westbound California Zephyr pulls out of Track 2 and turns toward the Buck Lead, Prospect Junction and points beyond. In the distance, the 14 hour late eastbound Zephyr is completing its stop.

Union Station doesn't typically get this busy anymore! Almost like the good old days in the 1950's when dozens of passengers trains came through daily. From left to right, a spare P42DC sits on a stub track. The eastbound Zephyr (running 14 hours late) sits on Track 1. The westbound Zephyr (running 2 hours late) sits on Track 2. UP power that had run on the point of the eastbound Zephyr were pulled off and placed on Track 3.

Two UP pilot units are pulled off of the eastbound Zephyr on Track 1 and will be put on Track 3 for the time being. Then, the spare Zephyr on the stub track will be placed on the point of the eastbound Zephyr for the trip to Chicago. Meanwhile, the westbound Zephyr takes fuel during its station stop.

For nearly 15 years, I've been waiting for the opportunity to take a picture like this! When running on time, the eastbound and westbound Zephyrs are about as far apart as they can be when they make their respective stops in Denver. However, on this morning, the eastbound Zephyr from the night before was running 14 hours late and the westbound zephyr was running 2 hours late. Here, the eastbound Zephyr is on Track 1 and the westbound Zephyr on track 2, each for their respective stops.

About 15 minutes after a 14 hour late Amtrak #6 arrived at Union Station, a much less late (2 hours) Amtrak #5 arrives and backs into Track 2.

Based on the time of day, you might expect that this is Amtrak #5, the westbound Zephyr. However, it is actually the eastbound Zephyr #6, running 14 hours late.
