Between September 6 and September 9, Union Pacific laid new tracks across a grade crossing at Lowell Blvd. These tracks, visible to the right, will become the new Main 2. Between September 19 and September 28, UP will remove the old BNSF crossing (in the foreground) and replace it as well.

Progress is being made on the addition of a second main track between C&S Junction and Arvada. In the last two weeks, concrete ties have been laid and a couple stretches of welded rail can be seen alongside the ties. A westbound UP coal empty departs from Bypass 1 westbound.

What to do when the sun is directly behind the train? Well, when life gives you lemons, make lemonade. Or, when life gives you a large glowing ball in the sky, make silhouette shots. An eastbound coal train is approaching the grade crossing at Tennyson Street.

Most days, UP runs the MNYRO, a manifest from North Yard to Roper, UT. This train, however, does not run on Sunday's. Instead, a MNYGJ runs from North Yard to Grand Junction. Here, the MNYGJ departs from Main 3 at C&S Junction. As it heads west towards Lowell Street, it passes by stacks of concrete ties which will be used in the installation of a second main track.

At Lowell Street, UP has a stretch of track down (with no ballast) that will eventually become Main 2. New grade crossing will be installed across Lowell between September 6th and September 9th.

At Lowell Street, a construction sign has been erected letting motorists know that the grade crossing will be closed from 9/6/11 until 9/9/11. During this time, Union Pacific will reconfigure the tracks across the road, adding in new tracks to accommodate the new second main and the (slightly) relocated BNSF Golden Sub.

Looking west at Lowell Street, you can see the currently missing BNSF Golden Sub, as well as the location where the tracks have been removed. This has been done to allow UP to add a second main track. Whether or not the new track will use the old BNSF alignment here (utilizing the existing grade crossing) remains to be seen.

Looking east at Lowell Street, all signs of the BNSF Golden Sub have all but vanished. UP will be adding a second track here soon. Once the second track is in, the BNSF tracks will no doubt be hooked back up. The question now is exactly where will the BNSF tie back in.

The bases for a new bridge over Clear Creek have been put in place. There is obviously still quite a bit of work left to do in order to complete the bridge (adding a second track across the creek), but signs along the bike path beneath the bridge indicate it should be complete by August.

Looking east at C&S Junction, you can see where a new bridge will soon appear to take a second track across Clear Creek. This new track will extend west at least to Lamar Street, and possibly further west.

The switch to nowhere! BNSF's Golden Sub has been severed from the UP at C&S Junction. UP is working on extending a second track west of C&S. Soon, this switch will be part of a crossover between the existing main and the new, second main.

The BNSF Golden Sub (which the Beer Train uses to reach Golden) is missing at C&S Junction! This is part of a new project UP has to extend a second train west of C&S Junction.

Unfortunately, it was well after sunset when the Circus Train finally departed south out of Denver. The last shot I was able to get was a times shot of the train on Main 2 at Kalamath Street, about 2 1/2 miles south of town.

At the very start of the Joint Line (20th Street), the Circus Train heads south on Main 2 with the addition of an SD70MAC. This is the first time I've ever shot 20th Street from the north side of the tracks.

After making a slightly tardy station stop, the eastbound Zephyr pulls down the Passenger Lead to continue east for Chicago. You can see Coors Field in the background, home of the best Major League baseball team this past April and worst Major League baseball team this past May...
