UP's track geometry car EC-4 was sitting in the storage yard (in North Yard) not far from Utah Junction. This is the second time I've found this particular car is this exact spot! Must be the preferred storage location while in Denver between trips.

Last year, construction finally began on a grade separation between Pecos Street and the tracks. This had been planned for years, but there was no funding. Finally, a mix of funds from Adams County, the Feds and Union Pacific came up with the money and the project is well underway. The new overpass would block the view of UP's signal bridge (for the Pecos Crossover), so the signal bridge is being relocated east.

Okay, if somebody can identify this little critter, please feel free to mention it in the comments. I'm guessing it is some kind of GE something-tonner, but this is outside my realm of expertise! It was sitting near the grain elevators at Utah Junction.

A coal load heads south at 20th Street with the same crew that brought the train down the Brush Sub. The train will make a quick stop at Kalamath Street to swap out crews so the next crew can the train to La Junta.

After a fantastic trip east, the Zephyr arrived at the temporary "Amshack" in Denver 25 minutes early! And while "Amshack" tends to be a pejorative term used for crummy, tiny depots, that is not the case in Denver. The temporary depot is, in my opinion, nicer than a lot of permanent depots!

Here we go! 2011 and you can still find a train with nothing but Warbonnets on it from time to time. Granted there are only two units, but I'll take it. A C44-9W and an SD75M lead the Denver, CO to Pueblo, CO manifest. Here the train enters the "triple track" section of the Joint Line in south Denver.

Just south of the old Gates Rubber plant, a southbound BNSF coal load is moving quickly along on Main 1. Coal empties awaiting new crews sit on both Mains 2 and 3.

It is a beautiful President's Day 2011 as UP's South Local proceeds through a clear signal on Main 1 at South Denver. This is the local where two main tracks go to triple track when heading south.

Four GE units and a single GP40M-2 head back toward North Yard from Burnham. I thought it was interesting that the doors on the long hood on UP 1526 were open after leaving Burnham! The unit (ex-SSW 7291) was definitely online.

On August 1, 2003, I shot this very same unit when it was still in full, unpatched gray! It was working on the Montrose Local on that particular day.

We are getting closer and closer to Amtrak utilizing Union Station for the last time until the major transit project is complete. In the meantime, this is the building that Amtrak will use in Denver for it's passengers. It had been a light bulb distributor for years, but has now been taken over and repainted.

An assortment of yard power - mainly GP15-1's - sit idling in UP's 36th Street Yard. There is also a string of road units (right side of the shot) that have been serviced and are ready to depart as well.

BNSF's Buck Local heads south on the BNSF "New North Main" alongside the UP Main. The local has just come down off the Front Range Sub and is headed for the yard. It is going to have to stop for a bit though due to traffic ahead blocking its way. I love that in 2010, you can still find a blue and yellow GP60 and a Heritage GP38-2 working together on a train.

This GP38 (still in the body of a GP35) was the fourth unit on BNSF's Provo to Denver train. After being dropped off in Denver, the unit would depart the following day on BNSF's Denver to Galesburg, IL manifest. This is a Utah Railway unit that I had always wanted to shoot but never got the chance in Utah. How ironic that I was finally able to capture in right in my own back yard in Denver!

Rumor has it that the unit is off to Panama City, FL where it will be upgraded (rebuilt) as a GP38-3. Utah Railway sister unit UTAH 2000 is apparently there and being rebuilt as of this picture. So it would seem that UTAH 2002 will be returning to Utah Railway, but I guess only time will tell for sure.

Nearing the end of its journey, the eastbound QPVDVJ (Provo to Denver trackage rights train) passes through Fox Junction on UP's Main 2 towards Prospect Junction. When I left home in Arvada, the train was just leaving Leyden. Considering rush hour traffic, I was shocked I got to Fox in time to get this shot...granted I got there with less that 30 seconds to spare!
