Power on the Beer Run seems to be changing a lot lately. BNSF will throw just about anything on there. I've seen everything from SD40-2s to SD70ACes. C44-9Ws to ES44DCs. On this day, an H2 C44-9W and a H1 C44-9W power the train. The two geeps in the back will serve as the Golden Switch power in the coming week.

In order to make it to the lower yard at Coors, train have to cross West 44th Avenue (the same road that the Colorado Railroad Museum is located on!) Trains cross 44th using a stoplight for protection. The stoplight doubles as the stop light at the intersection of 44th and Eldridge.

Nearly 12 miles west of Denver, the Beer Run is approach the switch at Terrell Junction on the Golden Sub. At Terrell Junction, trains have the option of going into the lower yard (switch reversed) or the upper yard (switch normal). In this case, the train will be going to the lower yard.

Approaching the end of the line, the Beer Run throttles up to make the final climb into the upper yard at Coors. A few cars drive along on 44th Avenue in the distance.

An SD75M (which unfortunately is no longer wearing the Warbonnet scheme) leads the westbound Beer Run toward the upper yard at Coors. The tracks here run along 44th Avenue and are about to pass underneath Highway 52.

A few miles outside of the Coors Factory, the westbound Beer Run comes to a stop at Terrell Junction. It is here that trains can either run straight into the west yard at Golden, or turn south (on the diverging route) and enter the east yard. The train must wait for permission from the Golden Yard to enter.

Moffat Tunnel (UP) Ski Train
Quick, grab your spot! The open vestibule on the Kansas is crowded with people all wanting to take in the beauty of the trip west on the Summer Ski Train. After a long heat wave, temperatures are in the 50's for these passengers, headed to Winter Park for a special catered dinner. The train is passing through the shortest tunnel in the Tunnel District, Tunnel 29.

Moffat Tunnel (UP) Ski Train
About halfway between the daylighted remains of Tunnel 28 and the still-standing (albeit short) Tunnel 29, the Ski Train heads west in the late afternoon on a cloudy June afternoon. The Ski Train, making a special chartered run, hasn't headed west of Denver in the afternoon since a similar charter on June 19, 2003.

The Golden Switcher works in the North Yard of Coors, moving between yard tracks and crossing 44th Avenue. Interesting choice for a yard switcher, BNSF 8710 is a GP60 - my favorite geep since the GP30!

The westbound Beer Run makes its way down the grade into Coors North Yard alongside 44th Avenue. On this particular day, the inbound Beer Run was comprised entirely of loaded coal hoppers. This is the first time I can specifically remember seeing an SD60 on the Golden Sub.

It is wonderful that 19 years after the fall of Rio Grande, you can still find fly letters roaming through the Tunnel District! The last car of the Ski Train, the Kansas, is about to head into Tunnel 19.

The eastbound Ski Train is running right on time as it emerges from Tunnel 20. In the distance, the snowcapped mountains of the Continental Divide are clearly visible!

This coal empty is right in the heart of the Tunnel District on its journey west. The head-end of the train is approaching Tunnel 21, in the distance the train is still passing through Tunnel 20, and even further back (not in the picture), the back of the train is still in Tunnel 19!

No wonder the Tunnel Motor was invented to help keep engines cool! You can clearly see the heat distortion floating at the top of Tunnel 20, a 460 foot-long tunnel in the Tunnel District.

Tunnel 20 is more than long enough to keep both units on the head end of this coal empty in the dark as the train makes it way west. Tunnel 20 is one of the few tunnel in the Tunnel District that is straight as an arrow.
