An eastbound coal train slows in the siding at Granby as it approaches the depot. The train will let a crew member off here in Granby and a westbound manifest will pick him up and carry him back to Bond.

A couple of blocks west of Granby finds the eastbound MRONY crossing County Road 57. I'm a big fan of the shot looking down the straight away here and definitely have a goal of shooting an eastbound in good morning light during peak "fall colors" season one of these years.

These passengers on the platform at Granby were expecting Amtrak when they saw the headlight in the distance. And, if Amtrak had been on time, it should have been the Zephyr's headlight. However, the Zephyr is running about two hours late as the MRONY heads east past the depot.

This is a place I've wanted to shoot an eastbound from for quite some time. While I'm pleased with the outcome, I would now really like to shoot here in the morning when the fall colors are at their peak. This is about four miles west of Granby.

Trees are just starting to show signs of changing color here at the west end of Fraser Canyon. Eight GE AC units (of which only three are online) lead the MNYRO west.

It is a beautiful June afternoon as a slightly tardy California Zephyr makes its way west a few miles west of Granby. The train is following the headwaters of the Colorado River. June may mean summer, but that doesn't mean you can't still find a lot of snow in the Rockies!

A few miles west of Granby, the California Zephyr is making good time on its journey west. Morning sunshine has given way to mid-morning clouds.

A wide-angle shot of UP's Board of Directors Special as it passes through Granby. The train is on the main. The siding is the next track closest to the camera, followed by the Granby house track.

A 300mm look at UP's Board of Directors Special as it makes track speed through Granby. The train included 15 cars and a bunch of upper management for the trip west.

In the distance, UP's Board of Directors Special is approaching with UP 1989 on the point. The Granby depot still stands, used twice a day for the California Zephyr.

It is a beautiful afternoon in the Colorado high country as an Energy-bound coal empty blasts by on the main track at Granby. Right here, we are about 8,000 feet above sea level. Track speed is increasing toward 60 MPH for the trip west toward Hot Sulpher Springs.

In the wee hours of the night before, a westbound coal empty tied its train down at Granby due to a track gang working further west. Twelve hours later and the train is still tied down in the siding. Meanwhile, a train heading for the Energy Mine on the Craig Branch with a live crew passes by on the main track.

A roster shot of FRA (Federal Railroad Administration) track geometry car (DOTX 220). This car is used to check for defects in the rail that may lead to derailments. And it works well! Between Tabernash and Granby, the train found four significant defects, each requiring a slow order between 10 MPH and 25 MPH.

A bit of a surprise on this particular day, as the Federal Railroad Administrations track geometry car, led by a year-old ES44AC, heads west. The car is being used to check for defects in the track to help prevent derailments.

Not having a particularly busy morning, the one passenger waiting to board at Granby looks toward the conductor at the rear of the train, preparing to climb aboard.
