The SD70ACe see here is bringing up the tail end of the train. The mine at Energy (where the train will load) has a balloon track, effectively turning the train around as it loads. Overnight, however, a westbound coal empty arrived in the yard! It is stopped on Track 3 and is waiting for a crew to take the train to Energy. Upon loading at Energy, the train will return to Denver and ultimately deliver the coal to the Valmont power plant in Boulder. All of Phippsburg falls under Yard Limits with CTC on either side. So the dispatcher aligns trains in and they "disappear" from the dispatcher's view. All trains that come through P-Burg undergo a crew change. Trains leaving to or coming from the east have Denver-based crews. Trains leaving to or coming from the west have Phippsburg-based crews. When I visited Phippsburg five years ago, there were three coal trains waiting in the yard here. Since then, of course, coal traffic has substantially dropped off.
