The train is setup in a push-pull configuration. I am not quite sure why that was the case. The train is crossing the 80th Avenue grade crossing, just east of Leyden. The train is leaving Leyden behind and is crossing the 80th Avenue grade crossing. This is the only grade crossing between North Yard and Leyden that is not a quiet zone crossing. Alas, when the train showed up here at 80th Avenue (near the east switch of Leyden), it turns out the Warbonnet was third on the head end. First, the lead unit is P40DC #824. Now, technically, this unit has been rebuilt to P42DC standards, but the number makes it a bit unusual as not many (ex) P40DCs are still running on Amtrak's roster. The second oddity is the lack of a baggage car. Interestingly, running without a baggage car tends to be the norm for the Southwest Chief, but that is far less common with the Zephyr. Evidence of the heavy snow fall is quite apparent as the front of AMTK 190 is covered in snow, and is indeed kicking up fresh powder as it approach the east end of Leyden at track speed. Severe weather on the plains has resulted in Amtrak canceling the Zephyr between Denver and Chicago. #6 has been laying over in Denver for the night, then departing west the next morning as #5. The Denver skyline stands tall in the distance. 2023 was a great year for ColoradoRailfan!
